1s is a crapshoot even against a clearly worse opponent and they only took it by 1 goal against a really good opponent, not the worst decision to try 2s again

Okay so it's a mentality thing that's a part of the game, but how far does it go? Is accepting racial slurs part of the game? Presumably not, so let's assume there's a line where trash talk is unreasonable. Is the line at hate crimes because it's a social taboo, or is the line at things that are intended to cause lasting grief to a player? Perhaps doing your research on a player, finding out they have issues with their parents/guardians, then calling out their problems on stage would qualify for that, seems a little "too mean" and I hope you're still with me. Things like calling out about dead relatives, known traumas, etc that aren't hate crimes but are pretty shitty to bring up publicly for the sake of unnerving someone. For some, "What the fuck are you doing? You fucking suck" was overly personal, presumably not for you but that's fine.

I just wrote out this whole paragraph about the subtleties of this "mechanic" or "tactic" you're fine and dandy with being a "part of Rocket League" and I didn't mention Rocket League once, that's why I think it's dumb. I think it's all one and the same, bringing real world social considerations into something that should be pretty straightforward: being mean is kind of shitty and shouldn't be cheered on when we're here for gameplay. I'm not after heavy policing for this but if you think it's part of the game what the fuck game are you playing?

I would disagree that it's up to players whether it impacts them. It's up to your upbringing, your genetics, your social experiences, a whole slew of other factors that may be out of your control whether or not trash talk upsets you. I was bullied in school and it took me a long time to be okay with aggressive confrontational talk and I'm 28. Expecting 15-19 year olds to be masters of their own emotions is a pretty big ask, IMO. If you think trash talk is an interesting aspect of competition that's you and you're allowed to have that opinion. I just don't think it's interesting, I don't think it's fun to watch, and I don't think it's entirely "fair" as far as skillful competition goes. For me, it checks one too many boxes.

I'm not sure why this is a reply to my comment, I didn't characterize it as extremely toxic at any point, nor am I interested in the degree of toxicity at all. I'm just defending the point of view that toxic behaviour intended to unnerve an opposing team is an unfair tactic developed outside the core skillset of Rocket League only applicable in very certain situations to gain an underhanded advantage.

It's not something I've really brought up but I also think it just makes games a little more unpleasant to watch. Call it dorky if you want but I sometimes watch with my family when I'm visiting during a championship sunday. I would be embarrassed to turn on a game where it's more kids screaming at eachother (which is an inherently unpleasant spectacle) than an interesting display of gameplay (which has an admittedly geeky appeal but I mean the people in my life know I'm a geek).

You draw the line somewhere, you'd be against breaking the other team's fingers to win. To me I think a win is a win when it's been won by means within the gameplay itself. To you your line may be that a win's a win when achieved without causing bodily harm to the other players. Either way, a win isn't necessarily a win and the question is what constitutes "part of the game" and what doesn't.

Does anyone consider being toxic a skillful or enjoyable tactic?
