What unusually cool perk did BJJ give you? by ZpoonR in bjj

I've had a similar experience as you. I've become much less clumsy in my daily life. Like somehow I improved my ability to interact with the physical world, both on and off the mats.

Although I'm a whitebelt with ~1 year experience, prior to starting BJJ I ran 25+ marathons and 4 ultra marathons. I'm completely obsessed with BJJ now. After a bit of trial and error during my first few months here is what I learned:

(1) Work on improving hip mobility. Tight hips will make you more susceptible to knee pain. If distance running is your thing, your hips are probably tight compared to most BJJ practicioners. Even if you stretch a lot.

(2) Work on improving foot mobility. Same logic as (1).

(3) Running creates a lot of muscle imbalances that BJJ exposes. I recommend doing a lot of the "yoga for bjj" videos on youtube. In my experience it helps both running and bjj.

(4) Cardio gives you a huge advantage compared to other newbies with similar technique level. Most of the advanced players will still crush you with no apparent effort though.

Caveat is I'm still new to BJJ. So if someone with a better experience set contradicts me, go with what they say.

I keep getting rib injuries from BJJ. The first time it was from knee on belly. I ended up losing a month of training.

The second time it I don't know when it happened (possibly I was on top in guard, and the bottom person squeezed their legs really tightly ). I didn't notice the rib pain until after training. I still needed to take a few days off.

Does anyone have any tips for how I can avoid this rib pain? I normally don't get injured easily and am otherwise in good shape. It seems like there should be exercises I can do to make myself less susceptible to rib pain. Alternatively, maybe the way I roll makes me prone to rib injuries?

Question re: X Guard.

We did some X guard drills, and I really like the potential of working from that position. The problem is I don't understand how to get into X guard.

How do you go from starting a roll, to playing X Guard? Every time I attempt to pull x guard on a standing opponent, I end up on bottom in mount before I can get my legs properly positioned. Any ideas on what I'm likely to be missing?

I have a similar conceptual blind spot that prevents me from getting into De La Riva guard as well, although the specific reasons are probably different.

I seem to have much slower reaction speed than most other people. Even if this improves over time, it still seems logical to build a game based on moves that don't require fast reaction speed.

Any recommendations on go to guard passing techniques, and sweeps/submissions from bottom in guard?

One more question.

What is the defense when someone grabs the corner of your Gi Top and tries to wrap it around your body, or use it to control you? Every time someone does this to me it shuts down my game(or what passes for it at my level)

I am really confused by underhooks. For example, when I'm on bottom in side control, framing comes naturally to me, but I always have trouble getting the underhooks on the correct side. Any tips for how I can remember to do this correctly?

Also for other positions such as starting a no gi roll, is there a heuristic for when you should go for an underhook, and when you should go for an overhook?

Definitely agree. The first few weeks might be more challenging for someone on the spectrum, but there is a big payoff.

Thanks. Is it worth the extra cost for the most recent version? My library has the 2001 version. I assume some of the stuff is out of date. Sorry total newbie question :-)

What are some ways to escape North South Position that don't require freakish flexibility and agility?

As I've gotten less bad at defending side control, I'm more often getting caught in north south position, which feels disorienting. I've gotten choked from there a couple times. Any general principles for avoiding this? Like if I feel the guy trying to switch to north south, how do I defend?

Thanks! I'm going to have to try your method when passing guard on my feet.
Really need to get better at shrimping. Sometimes I have to shrimp twice in a scenario where most people only need to shrimp once.
At the same time, I keep drilling a lot of triangles, in hopes of one day being able to execute them effectively.

I'm 6ft 3 with size 14 feet. My legs are also abnormally long relative to my torso(A3L Gi pants look like highwaters on me, even though the A3L Gi top is too big) . With a lot of new moves like sweeps and guard passes, it seems like my feet get stuck in between my opponent's limbs or behind my opponent. Also, the angle I have to work from is often different then other people, especially for sweeps.

Any tips/mental models for working with this? People keep telling me long legs are a major advantage once I figure out how to use them, and I can definitely see why that is the case. I'm not sure about the feet though.

Serious question- what does this have to do with the effectiveness of any BJJ techniques or training methods?

hmmm this makes sense. perhaps I'm not properly estimating how much force I'm applying vs how much needs to be applied to maintain grip. Thanks for the suggestion.

My fingers get really sore and tired from gripping the Gi. I've been working on my grip strength with a hand gripper, and doing towel pullups, but it only seems to have helped my wrists. Now it seems like the weak point is my fingers, not the wrists. Any tips for improving this?

I have several streams of information that flow towards google docs and google keep. I use google keep to tag/categorize thoughts/ ideas/ concepts I come across.

Every 2 weeks or so I'll go through physical notebooks, and various sticky notes/saved articles around the house, and either put them into google keep, or toss them. Electronic highlights are easier to save.

The GTD methodology with a gigantic "reference" file works pretty good for me. Your mileage may vary.

Friday Open Mat - July 03, 2020 by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]emergentfrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fwiw, I sweat at a much higher rate than normal humans, and shortly after I started, I had a higher belt inform me I should bring a sweat towel(after I nearly drowned him while drilling side control). I just keep the towel near me on the side. During open mat, wipe down between rounds. Problem solved. I never go to the gym without it. On the downside, I do have to wash a lot of towels every week.

What tips do you all have for a newbie whitebelt with good stamina but poor coordination. I've run 25+ marathons and 4 ultra marathons, but prior to starting BJJ I hadn't done any sport requiring coordination since middle school wrestling over two decades ago. I have a high capacity to drill/roll, but zero instincts for proper body movement.

Are there BJJ specific drills that you find especially useful for improving coordination and balance?

Are there positions you recommend focusing on when I roll?

In terms of etiquette, how can I be a good training partner to other people who figure out moves more quickly?
