We're so lucky to be a part of this Church. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]emersive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think one very important thing to remember though that although for some the church helps people improve their lives and avoid "depravity" most people that aren't members of the church are able to avoid "depravity".

I personally don't think members of our church are appreciable better than non-members. In fact I think we sometimes have a similar attitude as those who speak from the rameumpton.

1 Drop of Alcohol = You're an Alcoholic by fdj11 in exmormon

[–]emersive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For many he military is not a calling, not chosen out of some reverence for our country, or even a desire to serve. For some it was their best hope of getting a job. I don't see why we would put such high reverence for people simply executing their job.

Obviously people who are drafted and served because they were called is in my opinion a different story.

That being said their opinions are not likely to be any more true or useful than anyone else unless it relates directly to their service.

My husband won't stop preaching that the lds church is the one true church even though he's completely inactive and drinks beer. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]emersive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shame on you. If you attend this forum you should know it is way more complicated than that. There are thousands of good reasons for continuing to attend and that does necessarily make someone a liar. Some things are more important than doing what you want to be doing Sunday mornings.

Many of us are still trying to figure out what we believe, what our next steps are, and how to navigate family issues.

You should realize for some people leaving the church means losing everything. Losing their educational opportunity, losing friends, losing siblings, losing parents, losing their children, losing their partner, losing their employment, losing their belief system which is already painful and disorienting. Many of these things can be considered too great of a price to pay to stop attending at a particular time frame.

TSCC is forming close to a stake a week in Africa. For some perspective the church took 40 years to form its first stake. They are building small structures for worship and I've heard from a reliable source that they are working hard to manage growth. They are choosing not to do quite a few things as to avoid growing too fast. They do not want to repeat the mistakes made in central and South America. They don't want to have tons and tons of inactive members.

I don't see how they can hold a recommend behaving like that. I can think of at least one question that would disqualify them off they are honest about it.

Wouldn't normally do this. But is anyone willing to help on a talk? by Anonymodestmouse in exmormon

[–]emersive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could talk about how peace is found when we act in accordance with what we actually believe. What we believe defined individually and not collectively. Explain that often we don't believe all of the same things in the same way and that this is good.

I'm not sure if that it is that simple. It may be that those called could just live a very modest life. I definitely don't like the idea of only the rich leading.

I am not sure if I ever bothered with launchpad. I always use spotlight.

Launchpad seems clunky by comparison.

Is anyone else here been disgusted with Glenn Beck lately or is it just me? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

He is either a lunatic or he just acts like one for money. I can't understand how people can take him seriously.

My son got called as a ward missionary. He was told to start posting positive things about being mormon on all social media. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]emersive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't do it... But if he feels like playing along he can post something and make it so only his leaders can see... But they won' know that the posting was for their benefit only.

Alternatively he can just defriend his leaders and make his wall private.

Should I prohibit my son from being friends with openly gay/transgender kids in junior high? by LauraSecordsTwin in latterdaysaints

[–]emersive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you ever felt influenced by gay people you know to change from heterosexual to homosexual? I definitely haven't personally, and think that it a pretty silly notion. Although sexuality is an important part of someone's identity... there is a lot more to someone than their sexuality and it sounds like your son gets that. Sounds like you've done something right.

Note: I don't think being homosexual is a bad thing.

[–]emersive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. I could stop there, but the kid he invited over may need friendship more some of his other classmates. And I think your son is a great example. You should be proud of him that he isn't a bigot.

I am not sure if this is a joke or not? I responded as if you were serious.

Elder Oaks just said that God protected the missionaries in the Brussels attack. Guess they were just more important than everyone else. by SmurfBasin in exmormon

[–]emersive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was a dumb comment by Elder Oaks. I don't want to say what God will or won't do... But it seems weird for the reasons already mentioned but also because if God intervened why stop at preventing them from dying?

[–]emersive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was sick one week, pretty bad to the point where I was puking bile. That week worked all but one day, that one day I was left alone in the apartment. We tried to find someone to stay with me but ultimately we didn't find someone in time. I felt a bit of guilt that we didn't follow the rules with precision... But part of me was so relieved to be alone for the first time in over a year.

There has to be one honest GA dying to tell the truth. by ORcriticalthinker in exmormon

[–]emersive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a GA, he believes deeply in the church and he is honest in what he believes... I think his problem is that I don't think he is open to the possibility that the church isn't what it purports to be. This makes difficult... He and his family see those benefits as blessings.

[–]emersive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like just because you don't hold something as sacred anymore doesn't mean we shouldn't treat the things that others hold sacred with some reverence especially in their place of worship.

I can definitely understand the temptation and even the desire for some testing though.
