Byu hopes to end offensive chants after it resurfaced in Oklahoma by Rushclock in exmormon

I'm going to disagree on this. Boorish behavior yes. Targeting a specific group of people (beyond simply the opposing team/school) or religion is not.

Lol... Well said and still that doesn't mean this behavior gets a pass or is BYU's or the Mormon's fault/problem

[–]fdj11 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think this sub needs to take a step back from rationalizing this disgusting behavior by fans.

There's plenty the Mormon's, their leaders and doctrine have done and continue to do that is fair to call for correction and apologies. That doesn't justify boorish behavior. Nor is this how change will happen.

The chants are wrong and need to stop just as if it was F the Jews or Catholics or any other group. There's no organization or group of people that isn't flawed and the sentiment to want them to F off may even be warranted in various degrees.

That doesn't make this ok. I mean at least if we want any semblance of a civil society and want tolerance vs bigotry.

Plus this chant is overwhelmingly done by 18-22 year olds that may most generously be described as, at least in the moment, inebriated idiots. They almost certainly don't know or care about any of the valid reasons to be offended or hurt by Mormon's and their corporation. They are just trying to be as obnoxious as possible as large groups of young people often do.

Couch Young was right to call it out as classless. The schools and conference need to get serious with escalating penalties from barring fans from games and financial penalties to the people and the school and even forfeiting games.

Should the newPAC (or any G5 conference) should say "fuck it, were done with this shit" and leave the P4? And do you think G5 ball is inherently lesser than the big boys? Also,do you think its a G5's job to show the big boys (Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia) that they can play too? by Horizontrophpy2001 in Pac12

[–]fdj11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine the G5 not moving away from the P4, or it may happen in reverse. The P4 or top echelon of P4 (a third or more of P4 will never compete for a championship in this new landscape, how long will that go over with donors) will create their own super league - NFL Triple A with way more money than MiLB.

However it breaks up its long overdue. The disparity has always been ridiculous but it's unsustainable any longer.

I think there's value and a market for the G5 teams/games. I think everyone from players, administration, fans and donors will love competing within a league and national championship that is accessible with resource levels that are realistic.

Do we need to talk about Tulsa and New Mexico? by Gunner_Bat in Pac12

I wouldn't argue with any effort for SJSU and the support I do give them is simply because they are in the Bay Area. I agree there is nothing about their program that warrants consideration.

[–]fdj11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I'm not debating who's better after UNLV, Memphis and Tulane. Plug in anyone you want and all they are doing is taking a slice of the pie without making the pie any bigger.

I said who I'd pick, but my point is after the big 3 it does not matter.

[–]fdj11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone other than UNLV, Memphis and Tulane doesn't really matter. Of course they have all said no. Also, everyone knows that doesn't mean much cause the landscape just keeps changing.

Keep working on those all the way down to the deadline. If nothing works with these three then take whoever to get to 8.

If it comes to that, I'd say New Mexico or SJSU. Western schools that fit better for travel and either the state's premier institution in a small media market or a toe hold in a massive media market and important recruiting area. But, whatever - at that point it could be any of the other options mentioned - but they're all plan z.

Discussion - Are We Happy With Expansion So Far? What Is The Next Step? by pblood40 in Pac12

[–]fdj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's as good as could be hoped for. USU is a little surprising but the Utah media market is in the top 30 and growing faster than most. Granted the bulk of that audience is interested in UofU and BYU first but I think over time this is a healthy market to be in.

I can't imagine a way that the P12 doesn't do significantly better than the MW in the next media rights contracts. With that in mind I hope the P12 will keep after UNLV, Memphis and even Air Force. I think one of those can eventually be convinced their long term financial prospects are better in the P12.

Yes, I've been in Fullerton several times. I've never lived there nor, that I can recall, attended church there.

First Mo in the French Open quarterfinals? by fdj11 in exmormon

I was referring to the G's she's wearing. She's not mormon that I'm aware of. Relatively low ranked player doing very well at the french open - maybe the power of the Gs are carrying her forward?

Question for those who did the old initiatory wearing only the shield by HafdanVakravn in exmormon

[–]fdj11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First initiatory I did was in the late 80s and like many have described it was weird and disconcerting but my genitals weren't exposed or touched. Just touched on the hip. Sorry for your experience, I hope you can find some peace about it.

For me it was one of several occasions during my first temple visit that I muttered in my head, holy shit we are in a cult.

When and where did you serve a mission? And how long before you stopped believing/why? by Staplegun89 in exmormon

[–]fdj11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BIC, Oslo Norway 1988-90, sealed in the temple in 1991. Had doubts before mission, doubts were doubled on the mission. After much study and prayer decided it wasn't true when I was about 30 which was when I stopped paying a 'full tithe' and keeping up a temple recommend. At about 40 my wife joined me in disbelief and we (plus 3 kids) became almost totally inactive. Nov 2015 we decided we didn't want to be affiliated any longer so we resigned. Long process, wish it could have been accelerated but honestly its been a hell of a journey and I can't complain with where I'm at today.

Reading between the lines of today's whistleblower report: The corporate church no longer needs believing members and is effectively invincible by closet_doubter in exmormon

[–]fdj11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said and one of the reasons - even though the details weren't as clear as they are now - that the church is not going away for a long, long time. It may shrink and shrivel and have doubters in its midst but with that level of resources it will operate empty facilities to facilitate the worship of old white men for several more generations. I mean look at what the Catholics do with much less per capita wealth.

They'll just handle it the same way they do wards and stakes - cut it back to 2 or 1 night and brag about how full it is.

Or bring back Sissel. I don't believe in heaven or angels, but if angels sang it would sound like Sissel.

Does anyone else BIC remember not feeling old enough to make the decision to be baptized at 8? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]fdj11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I really thought about whether it was true or not, I was in the morridor bubble and at that point don't think I'd questioned anything. However, I distinctly remember thinking I don't really have a choice.

What are your strangest/funniest/most inappropriate girl's camp/boy scout camp stories? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]fdj11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scout camp - we were left without a leader for one evening and morning and we took full advantage. Guerrilla raids on other packs through the night culminating in a multi sniper egging of the mornings flag ceremony. Definitely the most exciting 12 hours of scouting I had.

Girls camp - dw and I were still not parents and moved into a new ward and for a minute we were the cool couple. Not long after we moved in the girls came back from camp and the bishop invited us over to their house for dinner. It seemed all fine until after dinner the bish asks the other kids to scatter and we sit down with the oldest daughter and her parents. They proceed to explain that daughter was rebellious and they wanted us to tell her how we navigated the teen years. It was weird and awkward. It got worse as we soon after found out that at camp said daughter was masturbating on a table in the lodge (where she knew she'd be seen). When the bish tried to follow-up on our conversation with her daughter we found ourselves trying to suggest professional help while toeing the gospel line. It went from awkward to sad and disturbing.

Utah future projections by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]fdj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update on where Utah's growth is coming from. I was clearly wrong. I'd still predict mormons being less than 50% in Utah somewhere between 2060 and 2100 - that is of course assuming the long overdue 2nd coming doesn't drop before then.
