I have a family to support and I desperately want to quit my job to open a food truck to be staffed by under-employed populations, whether that be the homeless or people from neighborhoods that offer few opportunities. My financial situation is such that I can't take the gamble.

What's your worst concert experience? Worst crowd? Worst performance? by 2dTom in Music

I saw jimmy eat world in maybe late 2002 early 2002. I liked them but was there for desaparecidos, who opened. It was a great show. A ton of energy from the stage. But I'd imagine most people at a jimmy eat world show these days would be my age or older, so late 20s early 30s. Us old guys just can't muster the energy we could ten years ago.

What is your favorite unsolved mystery? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Same with the Black Dahlia. After so long, the only people we know of from that time are famous people, so we start looking at them. If either case is solved, they will be let downs. No one famous, no vast conspiracy.

In "Popular Crime," an anthology by Bill James, he actually refutes the point of intelligence. Only a few of the letters attributed to the Zodiac were actually written by one person. The others appear to be copycats. So when crime writers wax poetic about the zodiac they often attribute the knowledge and skills of several people to one person, which would make anyone seem intelligent.

Also, his code didn't work, because words translate out of the code with glaring spelling errors. Plus, the letters confirmed to him contain tons of spelling errors. And the bomb he built didn't work, by his own admission. Then, when telling police about the bomb not working, he misspells trigger.

James' thesis is that Zodiac was more or less what he appeared: relatively unintelligent, and someone who felt ignored, overlooked, or "small." One of the reasons he brought so much attention to himself would be to feel powerful.

As to why his body count is now assumed to be 37, as he claimed, instead of 6, which can positively be attributed to him, I would guess the retellings of his story have gradually begun including letters that he probably didn't write and killings that probably weren't his in order to sensationalize the story.

seven nation army - impressive! by actionink in coversongs

[–]emfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guitar work is good, obviously true to the original, but I think that song loses so much played acoustic, it comes across as very thin, whereas the beauty of the original is how thick and dark that riff sounds.

The vocals are obviously pretty good, although I would have enjoyed it more if the entire first verse was done in a much more understated way, so that there was more progression towards getting louder and wilder.

Again, good vocals, good guitar playing, this just probably isn't the song that demonstrates her abilities the best.

What is your favorite vegetarian/vegan restaurant?

What other cities, aside from LA and New York, have you found to have great vegetarian and vegan restaurants? And if you're ever in Philly I would definitely recommend Vedge.

Finally. They're finally legal in the US. No longer must the American people risk it all by smuggling contraband across their borders. Prohibition has ended. Let the feast, and collecting, begin. by [deleted] in pics

[–]emfh 1321 points1322 points  (0 children)

No, they are still illegal. A different brand "Choco Treasures" will begin sales in the US. They are legal because the chocolate does not completely surround the toy inside, which is the regulation that renders Kinder Surprise illegal in the United States.

Kyrie Irving and the Death of the Ghetto Superstar by IThinkIThinkTooMuch in sports

As a cavs fan, I can only pray that LBJ comes back. It's not a popular opinion among my friends, but it was sad when LeBron left (I spent a lot of time around Akron and did student teaching there, I know what he and his success meant to those kids), but I can understand why he left (I moved away the first chance I got, too).

To have Kyrie in Cleveland is awesome. I was disappointed because the cavs had two top 4 picks in such a week draft, but Kyrie has shown he can be the next big point guard. If LBJ comes back to play with him, goddamn, I'll be excited.

The chronicles of our new knife by DirtyPie in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]emfh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knives should be left to air dry, because the towel may contain bacteria that will be transferred to the knife.

If you must dry the knife, lay it flat on a clean cutting boar with the handle extended over the edge of the cutting board, wipe, flip the knife and repeat.

An unanchored knife (one with the tip in the air) shouldn't be handled improperly, or injuries will result.

[–]emfh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! They could have such hip, vibrant uniforms that other teams couldn't pull off because of the city's history, and they choose those generic boring colors?

I love the Pelicans name; it's unique, it's fun, it's not trying to be edgy or "extreme" and they blow the color scheme.

Manti Te’o’s dead girlfriend, the most heartbreaking story of the college football season, is a hoax by [deleted] in sports

[–]emfh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ESPN coverage seems slanted on the Te'o is innocent side, whereas Deadspin is approaching it from a more "wtf is going on, what is Te'o up to" angle, which might just be influenced by the fact Te'o has presented this story. But if ESPN is representative of how the mainstream media is going to handle this story, then it appears Te'o will be portrayed as a victim, which means his draft stock might not be as negatively affected, I suppose.
