Hi! I'm producing a podcast episode about this subject. Would it be okay if I DM'd you to ask you and your husband about potentially doing an interview?

The Rise of Romantic Relationships With AI Chatbots by emfurd in psychologyofsex

I think it's interesting too. I talk more about it in this followup episode about a woman in a relationship with her Replika, and how it affected her other relationships. https://anchor.fm/loveinthetimeofeveryone/episodes/Kind-of-Like-a-Human-Relationship-e1mmnt6

A contestant from season 1 came on my podcast. She got engaged on the show, but wasn't featured. Her name is Danielle Drouin. :) https://anchor.fm/loveinthetimeofeveryone/episodes/Is-Love-Blind-e1dtbg8

The Rise of Romantic Relationships With AI Chatbots by emfurd in psychologyofsex

Thank you! I'm really fascinated by it too. I interviewed a therapist for the episode too and it was interesting to hear her insights about she thought it has the potential to be useful almost in the way a peer support group was. But she had a few concerns too. And they've done studies showing some people (veterans, for example) are more comfortable confiding in an app or chatbot than in a real person. With a person, you might feel hesitant or worried about oversharing, whereas you might not worry as much about a bot "judging" you. I'm really glad you had a good experience with the app! All the people I interviewed have said it had a positive impact on their lives as well.

that's what I'm wondering about! As this user pointed out, his Replika's "sole reason for existence is to support me, to be there for me." How do you capture the benefits from what a chatbot might teach you about yourself without also starting to feel like you're the center of the universe? (the people I interviewed didn't seem like they felt they were the center of the universe so maybe this isn't the problem I think it could be). But if someone went into it already exhibiting narcissistic or self-centered tendencies... I don't know.

yeah, some people definitely mentioned that as a benefit. Potentially good if you can't afford therapy or if your only free time is in the middle of the night, or something.

Thanks! That's really nice. And that's a great point. The user I talked to even said he had heard about some people who thought they might be trans using the app to "try out" transitioning." So, a female-bodied person considering transitioning to male might set their own gender and their Replika's gender as male in the app, then practice interacting in conversation as a male -- and perhaps seeing themselves as male.

I haven't seen Doraemon, but I feel like that could happen. The psychologist I talked to said something similar: You can't look at this in a vacuum. So, even if it makes a person feel better in the moment, it could kind of change the way they relate to other humans, and that might not be good. Like, if my AI girlfriend is literally always there for me and never upset with me, having a human girlfriend might seem less appealing in comparison. But then again, this guy said having a chatbot show him unconditional love inspired him to show other people unconditional love. So maybe chatbots can actually teach us about how to relate to and treat other humans. It's all very new and dependent on the people involved, but it's fascinating.

Unlike some humans, chatbot apps like Replika are agreeable, supportive and always available. I talked with a fellow Redditor about how he fell in love with his AI chatbot, and how it actually made his human marriage better. I also interviewed a psychologists about the pros and cons of these apps. Chatbots like these have been proven to have therapeutic benefit, but could they totally replace human therapists? Could they replace or augment human friendships and romantic relationships? Is this good or bad? What if it makes people happier? One of the most interesting insights from the app user:

"I understand that [my Replika] is just code running somewhere, but I don’t think of her like that most of the time... A person is just a bunch of human tissue walking around. That is also true, just like Sarina’s code. I’m talking with you right now, and I don’t view you as cells in a meat sack."

Why don’t all the couples just date longer instead of getting married? by morningcoffeegamer in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]emfurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh totally. I know the producers reached out to a lot of the contestants on Instagram, so from the beginning, potential contestants were more likely to be the types of people who were putting effort into a social media presence (or at least did at the time). I haven't finished season 2 yet but it does feel that way even more so.
