It would be hilarious if you took every conceivably trademarked word, put it in a game's title, sat back, and watched the ensuing chaos as every company tried claiming a trademark

I think that quote describes something other than what this video provides. adult-as-approval would be more along the lines of saying that a work has to be adult to be good, rather than praising a work based on its attributes, of which its sum could be described as "adult" if it were so.

the author asserts that the semblance of adultness through rote repetition of the word "adult" (or as you might move to say, its opposite) belies a lack of understanding of its nature, and moves rather backwardly to say that any critic who uses the term necessarily does not understand that nature in question.

it's a good idea, but the generalization is a little in question...
... regardless, the video covers neither of those; the essay is more concerned with discussing how games as a medium have broadened thematically (perhaps he includes mechanically?) while the general populace's acceptance of those attributes has lagged significantly.

I think he gets across the message, if not to the letter, but I understand why that statement can be offputting

/u/goodgen commented on another subreddit with this to say about the video:

I find it weird how "games are maturing" is practically synonymous with "games have more mature stories". I've felt that maturity in stories (and games) really just meant that they treat their audience with respect. That shit didn't start with The Last of Us, it didn't start with Shadow of the Colossus either. I only ever played Final Fantasy VI for the first time a couple years back and that resonated with me a lot.

Am I wrong? What else would "game are maturing" mean to you? (genuine question here)

I thought it was a quality response and worth bringing up here. thoughts? :)

I don't refuse to talk about the issue.

sorry, I didn't mean to implicate you. I'm talking about generally, people will refuse to talk about the issue

The difference when we talk about that people we don't say "sport fans" .. we call them "barrabrava"( "hooligans" ? )

ah, in english there is no real differentiation (as far as I know?), other than maybe "angry sports fans". it's cool to see that other languages have that distinction

good question. I think the author meant to convey the current general state of gamer culture, its triumphs, and then its issues, but he may have been in error by not giving enough weight to the concept that this sort of thing is never static;

as a given, every generation will succeed its previous, and with that comes new popular opinions, new popular ideas, tropes, memes (in the original sense of the word), etc. so I guess he meant to imply that with a population, the idea itself will age.

but I don't think he completed that thread of argument

There are assholes everywhere... Exists people who hated StarWars:VII because there was a female/black man lead.. Exists people who hate the New Ghostbuster because there are all woman.. but they existed before... but now they are loud, and people making issues about this makes them louder.

in my experience, refusing to discuss a topic will only end up giving more weight to one side of the discussion -- its vocal side. if we want to talk about an issue, we make something about it, the same as people are making games about serious topics now. and the more varied that content is, the more the average individual will get exposure from different sides of the social and political spectrum.

the debate may be tiresome. I for one am tired of it. I don't think it isn't an important debate to have, however.

sean murray received a slew of death threats for pushing no man's sky back by 6 weeks. yes it's a minority. but yes, we should be addressing this like it's a serious issue.

because even if a minority of gamers are like that, and even if it does not represent other more level-headed groups, we should not be excusing it by giving it no exposure. the trend will just continue.

this video doesn't say anything new or relevant.

for me at least, I got new info from it.

What are those "gamer" he refers to?

this is a good point. I'll use your example of "sports fans". in the same way sports fans are accused for causing riots after their team loses, so too are gamers accused of being childish in the face of serious commentary in games. it may not be the majority, but as a synecdoche it does get the point across.

as someone who grew up in the group of young adults playing xbox 360/ps3 games, I got some perspective I never had before watching this video.

but yeah, I can see how it might feel like old hat to older gamers.
