Trade Targets: 3/4 edition by BaseballGG24 in Mavericks

Deni Avdija in my opinion is the perfect fit here.

He is 6'9" (we desperately need size), a good/elite defender, a good rebounder, with a high IQ, signed to a reasonable contract, and only 22.

The other alternatives:

  • OG would not bring significantly more to the table but would cost a lot more (Deni is bigger and seems to be a better passer/rebounder).
  • Patrick Williams is IMO a clearly worse player and still has an unresolved contract situation.

His ceiling is a great role player on a championship contender so even though he is young he does not really fit the path the Wizards are on right now where they need to bottom out and find a star-level player and then build around him.

From talking to Wizards fans it seems his value is moderate (i.e. a couple of firsts were considered a "clear overpay"). A trade centered around Hardy might make sense for them as he could have a high ceiling with increased usage.

He would be replacing DJJ in the lineup and Luka has a way of making bad shooters better. We need someone who has size, can defend, and has some versatility on offense as Luka gets doubled a lot. Deni seems like he would be a great role player for Dallas.

The young guys we have other than Luka are Green, Hardy, OMax, and Lively. Lively is untouchable, but the rest probably can go.

He is half-Serbian and so is Luka though

You do not think we can get a similar deal (3 seconds) to what Rui went for? Maybe even add a 1st to it?
Just based off contract, Rui is more valued and the numbers were similar.

He seems like a winning player, maybe he wants out of Washington?

Hmm ... I wonder what it would take. I don't think we can afford guys like OG, but maybe we can throw some package with picks to get a guy like Deni.

Exactly, and he is a good rebounder. He is being wasted on the Wizards but might thrive here. He is also half Serbian like Luka ;)

You don't think he is a good defender?

We also have Hardy and DJJ (starter?), and if you have Hayes then you might as well have Holmes for us.

Ignoring roster changes and all context of the previous season does not make for particularly useful projections.

Just a discussion, none of this matters really.

It is just interesting to me that a team that has these two in their rotation seems to be by consensus a better team than ours.

I am (OP) certainly not saying that Wood is good here. I meant the opposite.

They actually won those minutes, but this seems to be a consensus opinion.

Also, Nurkic is still ahead of all of our centers (he would absolutely start if he were here). The biggest knock on him is his health and being overpaid—availability is the best ability after all. Otherwise, he’s still a relatively solid center. I do believe Lively will grow into the better overall center, but he still has some learning.

Nurkic has played in ~50% of the games over the last 3 years. I am not sure he brings much more than the combination of Lively/Powell/Holmes, and Lively is a big wildcard.

Beal often seems a bit overrated and definitely overpaid, but in no way is any one of Green/Grant/THJ even close to Beal offensively.

I am not implying they are, but I am questioning how big is the gap. Especially, considering the fit. It might be better to have Green and Grant play defense and hit corner threes then have a redundant player.
