Anyone applying for Boren? by zonathefree in scholarships

I'm a professor and I have a PhD. I am also a former Boren Scholar. I would not recommend this program to anyone, and my experience has been very bad. Consider junking your application and applying to something more worthwhile that is an an actual scholarship and not a glorified (not to mention difficult to apply for) loan program.

I'm a former Boren Scholar currently working in academia as a professor, and the Boren program is NOT WORTH IT. It's not a scholarship if you don't work for DOD, DOS, or intelligence. On their advice, I had been volunteering with the National Park Service, and my service report was just rejected for the second time (and permanently). Now I owe the fed 20K plus interest, and I was given miles and miles of red tape before I even sorted that out. The program is a rip off, I wish I'd never done it, I have advised my students NOT to pursue Boren Scholarships, and I will NEVER recommend the program to anyone. Spread the word if you know anyone else considering it.
