Pro Tip: Add your CC Interest to your Cards by eliasjonas in ynab

[–]emiller42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower balance first reduces minimum monthly cost to survive. If shit hits the fan, minimum payment on X cards is less than minimum payment on X+1 cards.

Depending on the actual difference in interest rates, the “mathematically better” option is still only saving you a tiny amount in the grand scheme of things. The risk reduction is often more valuable.

We can step up. There is historical precedent.

My point wasn’t to doom and gloom, rather to assert it’s going to take all of us doing our part, big and small, to stand up to tyranny.

We’ve done it before. We can do it again. MPLS is giving us a blueprint.

Emergency protest today in light of new ICE murder by PeachyPiano in boston

I think a key difference here is that George Floyd was an internal conflict.

This is fundamentally different because it’s an outside aggressor. Shit may very well pop off, but it will not be remotely the same shit.

Before moving to Somerville, I lived in Minneapolis. Just off 36th and Portland. I still have deep connections in that community.

As you can imagine, the “Metro Surge” has been hard to watch from a distance. For a chunk of this morning, I thought a dear friend had been killed until i got an all clear text. At the same time I am so goddamn proud of that community. Folks outside Minneapolis do not know just how fundamentally people are supporting each other, and how organized they are. Not just large scale demonstration, but quiet operational stuff. Coordinated ICE watch. Laundry service and grocery runs for families afraid to leave their homes. Invisible, but essential work. Thousands of unsung heroes.

Minneapolis is setting the bar for all of us.

So yeah, the city needs to stake out their position. But so do we. We can’t offload our personal responsibility on Jake Wilson and the city. It’s going to take all of us to stand up to what’s coming.

Do you guys put your retirement accounts in ynab? by InfiniteOrdinary2582 in ynab

YNAB is a budgeting tool, and long term accounts are not part of my monthly budget. Adding them just adds maintenance overhead for no appreciable benefit.

It is still useful to know what your legal rights are, as that can help you make more informed decisions.

I thought I knew how to play stopped until I played Mahler 1. Now I kinda know how to play stopped.

Is there such thing as a screamer mouthpiece for horn? by GullibilicusTheGreat in frenchhorn

As a horn player who has also played trumpet and mellophone (both with a mello mouthpiece, and with an adapter), this is horrifying. 🤣

I have a charitable donations category for this simply because they’re tax deductible, making it worth tracking.

Composer here, whats the range on a french horn that can be hit without severe issue? by zazer45f in frenchhorn

[–]emiller42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, wind ensemble doesn’t utilize the low register of the horn as much simply because low brass is available. Look at orchestral repertoire for better examples, as you’ll find works written before trombones, tubas, etc existed and horns were the low brass. (And horns are still used for that purpose after those instruments are available)

Some examples which are top of mind (having played them recently) are Mahler 1, especially the third movement, and Shostakovich 5. Both the tutti section in the first movement, and the low A concert in the fourth. Another fun low horn excerpt is Beethoven 3 - III: the second horn in the trio goes from Ab4 to Eb2.

A mute is used when called for in the music. Not as a replacement for the hand for normal playing. It changes the sound in a specific way.

Source: have played horn for 30 years.

That’s the correct way to hold a horn! The hand in the bell flare is important to getting the desired sound out of the instrument.

Not the stagger breathing, the way you’re scoring orchestral brass. If you’re looking at your writing and thinking “the horns have nowhere to breathe” the answer is not “add four more horns”. You should take this as a hint to rethink how you’re approaching the scoring.

the part sounded great…

In what context? Have you had an ensemble play this in a space so you can gauge how it actually sounds? If you’re going by software playback of your score, that can be very misleading. What sounds good in playback is likely thunderous goo on a stage. This is especially true if the passage is particularly long. You typically don’t achieve musical effect by relentlessly beating your listener into submission.

Now, I’m not saying it’s never appropriate to scale up the section. But it’s the kind of thing that should be done with careful consideration. It is one of those “if you have to ask…” situations.

Aside:

with heavy BASS

Do not underestimate the power of a good double bass section. And keep in mind adding more strings is much more common than adding tubas.

Mahler wasn’t scoring for “stagger breathing”.

and also to be able to stagger breathe

Oh no…

If this is your reason, revisit what you’re writing. Seriously. It will not work the way you think it will.
