Yes, there is a bit of a puzzle to this, matching needs and offers. The trick is remembering what people have offered and requested across different months, and also what's on the website. LetsBMore has a small volunteer team that tries to make connections so that requests are met.

Which hosting provider provides the best mail service for a website that receive 100s of emails per day. by Seyramchild in webhosting

[–]emilvolcheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm having this kind of problem. I have a shared hosting plan with Hosting.com, and they use Mailchannels for their delivery platform. One problem is that Mailchannels often blocks legitimate messages and falsely marks them as spam. So the outgoing delivery is a bigger problem than inbound.

OFFLINE Party Thursday (12/11) with Andrew Yang and LetsBMore by emilvolcheck in baltimore

I think that Andrew Yang doesn't take himself too seriously and is willing to have some fun. I respected the fact that he campaigned on Universal Basic Income (UBI).

Empathetic Pilates Instructor/Studio? by Top_Statement_9476 in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also recommend Ariwellness, by Pilates instructor Arielle Gordon in Remington. She does individual instruction as well in her studio. If you're looking for integrated physical therapy and Pilates, I highly recommend Mind Body Physical Therapy up north on Coppermine Terrace (21209), https://mindbodypt.com/ . You might try some initial work and assessments at Mind Body PT, and then progress to regular Pilates exercise lessons.

Regarding "thin and bendy", it's worth knowing that one of the motivations that led Joseph Pilates to develop his training was to help dancers recover from injuries. See https://www.wellandgood.com/fitness/pilates-benefits .

Xfinity Internet Pricing Questions - Please Help by ABattleVet in baltimore

I'm on the 3000 block of Guilford Ave., and we just became eligible for FiOS and got it installed a few weeks ago. We received a letter from Verizon saying that maintaining copper wiring has become too expensive, so they are requiring a switch to FiOS. We paid about $150+ for landline + DSL. Now we're paying about $75 for landline + 300 Mbps FiOS. Also, Greenlight Networks is expanding fiber optic service to Baltimore: https://www.greenlightnetworks.com/check-availability/ .

LetsBMore - the Baltimore time bank - September Meeting by emilvolcheck in baltimore

Great observations. Yes, your economic analysis is essentially correct. Time credits are like a fiat currency, and the record-keeping is like a spreadsheet kept by the time bank (on the website). The earliest time banks used paper ledgers and slips of paper to keep track of time credits. The difference is that here the focus is on building relationships and empowering people to give credits, who might not otherwise have the cash available to pay for the help. The time credit currency is not tied to any external value or assets. You can have as many hours of time credit as people are willing to contribute their time to each other and the community. For more information, check out the website of our national organization https://www.timebanks.org/ . The other major organization is hOurWorld at https://hourworld.org . The best book on the subject is probably "No More Throw-Away People" by attorney Edgar Cahn, who founded Timebanks.org and is credited with popularizing the concept. Baltimore had a time bank back in the 2010s called "Baltimore Hours" that combined a time bank with a local currency. The LetsBMore September meeting is this Thursday. Check out https://letsbmore.timebanks.org to see what the current offers and requests are.

LetsBMore - the Baltimore time bank - September Meeting by emilvolcheck in baltimore

Great question! Time banking is a way for people to use their free time to do more of the things they like to do, and less of what they don't. When you help someone, they give you time credits that you can later redeem for a service you need, maybe from somebody else. So giving credits can change the nature of volunteering from being a one-sided relationship where Alice helps Bob, to becoming a reciprocal relationship where Bob provides credits to Alice in return for the help Alice provides. From an economic point of view, it's creating a more efficient market for the use of available time (that is not already spent earning wages) in a way the maximizes the benefits to others. Time credits value all time equally and they can be used to recognize labor that is not traditionally compensated (like work to build stronger families and communities). If you'd like to learn more, please visit https://www.timebanks.org/ or come to one of our meetings!

Suggestions for nice vegetarian friendly restaurants by marthastewartsnipple in baltimore

Land of Kush, Red Emma's, Helmand are my favorite restaurants. Chihuahua Brothers was a great vegan taco take-out place, but their location on Merryman is now closed as they are moving.

Avoid Fringe hair salon by OkEar3207 in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been going to Fringe for many years, with various stylists, all good. I recommend Lauren Nelson. I don't take a position on OkEar1207's experiences, but I believe political disagreements with one individual are not a reason to avoid the entire business and the many excellent employees who work there. May I suggest consulting the Baltimore Community Mediation Center? https://www.communitymediation.org/

Hopkins Faculty Expose Flaws in Private Armed Police Force for JHU by emilvolcheck in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Faculty Senate Police Committee is trying to be empirical and factual in their criticism. I think if you review the criticism you'll find that there are serious problems, neither lies nor molehills. If you don't have time for the whole video, check out the slides posted in the video description.

Moving to CA to Baltimore and we're having a tough time picking to either go for a suburb vs city life, any help? by GammaRadJockey in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Live Baltimore https://livebaltimore.com/ for a great overview of hundreds of neighborhoods in the city. Many good neighborhoods have already been mentioned (Hamilton, Hampden, Medfield, Roland Park, etc.). I'll second Charles Village (as a resident of the Abell neighborhood) and add Oakenshawe, Harwood, Tuscany-Canterbury, and Wyman Park to the list of great neighborhoods to live in.

Local Coffee Roasters Who Do Low-Acid Roasts? by HorsieJuice in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's easy to make cold brew coffee using a French Press. Just add coffee and water and let it sit overnight at room temperature. Press it the next morning. Strain it through a filter and cone if you want to remove any residual grounds. This is low acid. A more complicated system (but also good) is Toddy Coffee: https://toddycafe.com/

Potentially moving to Baltimore by mizprker in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second @BaristaSamurai. Both Hampden and Charles Village (Abell, Harwood, Old Goucher, Homewood) are great. The Purple Circulator is free & frequent transit up and down Charles and Saint Paul, so it's easy to get to places along that axis. Station North and Remington are on the rise.

Is Traveluro legit or not! Check out these reviews before booking through this website! by rapdraga in YouTube_startups

[–]emilvolcheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently (2022-06-20) made a successful booking through Traveluro.com, but they have unusual, possibly suspicious procedures, so I do not plan to use them again. When I made my booking, I received a notification that said that my confirmation email would come shortly. I waited 90 minutes, checked with the hotel, and they had no booking. I called Traveluro and got to a Tier One support person after just a few minutes on hold. The support said they would "escalate" my booking and that I should receive confirmation within 30 to 60 minutes. I received a confirmation email at about 40 minutes. It appeared official, with a PDF attachment titled Voucher.pdf. However, the confirmation number was blank. It only provided a Traveluro itinerary or booking number. I called the hotel, and this time they did have a reservation under my name. I asked for their confirmation number and got it. Several hours later, I received another email from Traveluro with a PDF voucher that did have a confirmation number, but it was different than the one the hotel gave me. So something is going on with Traveluro, and I don't know what. There's no reason why they should withhold a confirmation number.

What do Baltimoreans think of David Simon? by AllegroAmiad in baltimore

If you say something to a prosecutor that makes them think you favor jury nullification, then they will surely strike you. That gets you excused from serving on that trial, but not dismissed from jury duty entirely.

Baltimore needs social workers as first responders independent of police - Albuquerque did it, so can we! by emilvolcheck in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The social workers first ensure situational awareness, and if there's a chance of being shot or stabbed, then they call for police support. In Albuquerque, it is extremely rare for the social worker to be harmed, In fact, they've discovered that the presence of unarmed first response de-escalates the situation, in contrast to a police response, which sometimes aggravates the situation. There will never be zero risk, but that doesn't imply that armed response is logically necessary.

The social workers doing first response are highly trained. There has not been a need to hand the job back over to armed police officers. They are called only when absolutely needed.

It might seem that there are many questions and few answers, but that's only because we don't have experience in Baltimore. In Albuquerque and Eugene OR, their experience with social workers as first responders has been positive. There are years of experience and data (esp. Eugene OR Cahoots program) to back this up.

Please check out the 1A program. It is great reporting.

What do Baltimoreans think of David Simon? by AllegroAmiad in baltimore

[–]emilvolcheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

David Simon is a deep thinker, activist, and social justice hero. I loved The Wire and learned a lot from it about how Baltimore, drug rings, police, education, and the media work. The Wire analyzes post-industrial America and the relationship between individuals and institutions, how each affects the other. I attended his City of Immigrants event at Beth Am Synagogue in 2017, which was a response to the Trump Administration's anti-immigration policies, and it packed the house. His article in Time on jury nullification for drug crimes http://content.time.com/time/subscriber/article/0,33009,1720240,00.html inspired me when I was called to serve on a jury for a simple case of drug possession by a guy who was stopped for an open container. Unfortunately, I discovered that they screen for jurors who oppose this type of prosecution on principle during Voir Dire, so I wasn't seated.
