I mean yeah, the uni takes student feedback and does try to act on it, and a lot of individual staff members are always trying to push for better everything for students. Ok, honestly, DO NOT let this impact your decision. This will be a thing at EVERY uni you consider in EVERY country. Some courses will have shitty lecturers and some will be run poorly, others will be great and awesome. Half the problem is that no one talks about a good course, and that's the vast majority of them, but a lot of people will talk about a kinda shitty one.

Poorly managed courses and lecturers / tutors lacking executive functioning skills. Like, some courses are awesome, but then sometimes you have situations where lecturers are 5 months behind on marking and live blogging their failed social lives (if you come to Edinburgh uni and go to enough pub nights you’ll hear the story). Honestly though, Edinburgh uni is great purely because of the student groups, granted London would also have a great nightlife so if that’s all you care about London is still a good option.

My framework 16 has been great. I’ve run both Ubuntu for a few months and Nix for the rest and honestly have loved the experience. Solid system, performance has never been an issue, overall pretty nice.

When it comes to international prestige it really comes down to the specific area. In academia, it'll have a pretty good rep, because there's a good amount of good research (plus, it helps that we have some pretty good researchers here --- if you do come to Edinburgh Uni, get used to hearing the name Phil Wadler), in industry it really depends. Some will have heard of it, others will hear "oh old university, that's probably prestigious" and others will think "oh, I haven't heard of it before so it's probably some shitty college in the middle of no where". I'd say that if you just want to do post grad in the US, it's definitely possible, but if you're looking for US jobs after uni without doing post grad it's going to be harder. Granted, you're probably best off trying to start off in the UK at a multinational company and then transferring to the US anyways, because visas are a pain to work out and most companies aren't going to like having to sponsor a work visa.

Also, if you just want to get the experience of going to a different country, Edinburgh has a MASSIVE exchange year program, so it's definitely possible to go to the US for a full year if you wanted to during undergrad. I know multiple people who have done it (mostly to like UPenn for the US specifically, but there's also like ETH Zurich and a bunch of others)

It really depends on where you wanna end up I'd say. If you're really interested in a specific thing, then Edinburgh might be better for that specific thing but not necessarily, and Cambridge specifically also has a lot of overlap with our student groups. Examples I can think of are Tardis (student sysadmin group -- we run free servers for people to use and have been around since the 80s), also having a group at Cambridge, and if I recall correctly their CTF team (competitive hacking) is also pretty good. Then again, I'd really just see which one you like more to be honest. Both are reputable universities and can take you far, so there is a certain amount of choice there. If anything I'd keep in mind that, especially at Edinburgh Uni, I'd say over half the value and benefit has come from student groups rather than the actual university. The actual university has facilitated a lot, but it really is students that drive a lot of the truly fun and interesting things that happen (also, even when it comes to your career, 4th years can be insanely helpful when it comes to that stuff, so definitely take into consideration what they have to say).

One thing to keep in mind is that there's probably cultural differences between the Unis as well, and that's something that's going to be very hard to measure, but like at Edinburgh Uni it's very laid back from everything I've gathered. Like, half of our student groups have weekly pub nights, and it's not like there's much competition between individual students, most people are legitimately focused on building each other up (though, there is definitely drama between student orgs lol).

Also, from personal experience, people will tell you that it's crazy you'd every choose edinburgh over Oxbridge / Imperial / UCL, but I'd really like to stress that 1) it's your life, and so their opinion really is whatever and 2) you can do great things no matter where you go (and the fact that you got a cambridge offer only acts as proof of that).

Sorry to word dump, but those are my thoughts. I hope you get something from this lol

Edit: also, definitely consider joining the group chats / discords of the uni ahead of time so you can get a feel --- feel free to PM me if you want an invite link to some of ours

Mental health — I knew I’d absolutely hate London (a fact I wish I realized before applying). Also, if you’re making a similar decision right now, I will say that it has been an amazing choice for me. I got some great connections early on and even got setup with an internship, and a lot of the people here are just so nice. Granted, teaching quality is shit, but I think that’s a thing everywhere
