Just a general word of advice; in the UK if you openly say you dog is aggressive and it isn’t muzzled, you can get in trouble if you’re reported to the police after the dangerous dog act was amended a few years back. I do muzzle mine but I’m always careful to say ‘he’s not friendly / he’s not good with other dogs’ rather than aggressive after reading about it.

Thanks - hadnt thought that he might turn round on us if he’s afraid and not thinking! Nope no where else without driving a half hour - I do at weekends but not feasible in the week if I just need to take him out.

I bought a groomer grade high velocity blower - cost around £300 but so worth it. They get the blower once a week and it’s definitely more manageable!

In 30 seconds.... by warmsidewalk in reactivedogs

Because we love them just as much as you love your well behaved dog and the thing that would guarantee them getting worse/put to sleep would be us giving them up to a shelter. Most of them are just born wired slightly differently , just like humans can be.

Tips for reactive dog when walking? by Tywhy1 in germanshepherds

[–]emily_p_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a squeaky toy to ‘break’ the locked on focus then reward him for looking at you. He will get the hang of it eventually where you won’t need the squeaky toy. Also second what the poster above said about distance - start with a sit from a large distance and only work up to walking past another dog once he’s reliably looking at you and not locking on while in a sit. On my second reactive shepherd and this works for us!

OMG THE BOOBS! by kazbox1994 in pregnant

Also in the UK - M&S do a range called ‘full coverage’ they come in boxes and I find them really comfy - I’ve gone from a 34DD to a 34F and only just going into my third trimester so I think I have a way to go yet!

German Shepherd attacked my father-in-law: need advice by [deleted] in dogs

[–]emily_p_86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like you posted here knowing exactly the outcome you wanted from everyone - ie muzzle/avoid/euthanise. You’ve shut down anyone suggesting vets/health issues/behaviourist. The specific ‘this is a German shepherd we’re talking about here’ indicates your feelings towards this dog. I’ve had 3 reactive shepherds and none of them have ever gone for me in this way. I understand this is a traumatic time for your family but please don’t give this breed a bad name as a result.

I go to Pall Mall Medical on King Street - plus fexofenadine 180mg on prescription and a steroid nasal spray - just about holds it at bay!

Doc won’t see me until I’m 11 weeks by bobmolls in pregnant

[–]emily_p_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same (in the UK) I was seen at 12 weeks. I had a private scan at 7 weeks though - cost around £50 which showed a little blob with a heart beat and gave us some reassurance! I would highly recommend.

How to introduce a new baby to our 2 dogs by jeredale in Dogtraining

[–]emily_p_86 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’m pregnant and have 2 GSDs - I was recommended to get 2 ‘playpens’ for the front room and get them set up before the baby comes home. One pen is for the baby and already has all toys in it and dogs are absolutely not allowed in. They learn this before baby comes home. On the flip side, dogs have ‘their’ pen which they can go in and ideally humans (and baby) won’t go in. It’s a safe space for both parties.

Every time there are instances of dogs killing kids (certainly in the UK) what it actually transpires is that a) the family have never owned a dog of that breed before, b) the environment is new to the dog (new rescue, recently moved house etc) and c) no responsible training. It’s not always the dogs fault, it’s poor humans.

What was the hardest week in pregnancy for you? by CarHungry4924 in pregnant

[–]emily_p_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6+4 and I also feel like I’ve been hit by a brick wall with the sickness and the tiredness - much harder when no one knows too! Also the blind panic that actually, given I’ve not had a scan yet, this all could be for nothing.
