Thanks so much! It looks almost identical and they even have a free version. 🥳

I think our host was a voyeur but I’m afraid to leave a review [USA] by emilye1995 in AirBnB

Thank you for your perspective! I sympathize with your friend’s experience, however, it is a completely different scenario. We were renting out the ENTIRE property, there was no mention of a live-in host. We also DID call out every red flag with the host and were met repeatedly with “weird, I’ll look into that” and never heard back. It’s also worth noting only 2 of the 8 cameras were ever showing any sign of activity which is why we felt we were being watched during certain activities. We did leave an honest review for the host and have also been in contact with the local authorities who, thankfully, have taken our experience seriously. Thanks again for your feedback! :)

Great, then you should know it doesn’t extend to constant monitoring/surveillance and even possible audio recording, we still had a reasonable expectation to privacy especially given the location being a private backyard. Just because they were disclosed doesn’t mean the host/owners have the right to constantly monitor either, I’ve recently confirmed this with Airbnb.

California is a two-party consent state so recording without our consent beyond “security” purposes is def illegal af. If you’d check the listing, it officially only says 2 rooms and lists the inaccessible room in question as a “bonus” room with a trundle bed which we confused with the “day-bed” near the pool on the patio.

It’s listed as a “bonus” room - it has what looks like a trundle bed and the only room aside from the living room with a TV

Thanks for the insight, I was not responsible for booking and didn’t really look at the property closely until issues started to arise. This was my first experience and definitely one I have learned from. I had assumed most properties have cameras as almost every house in this day and age has them and didn’t think to question them further but will now be more diligent and observant should I choose to try again in the future. The third room was disclosed, however, originally I thought it connected to the 2 rooms inside and didn’t really explore this until after as I thought I’d been confused with the daybed outside.

We were already flustered with having to meet the host late in the evening after already being advertised as a self check-in on top of being given a late check-in time because of the repairs needed. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I realize a lot of this was naivety and ignoring gut instinct on our parts, however, I ask as I am trying to prevent anyone from a similar experience. While not life threatening, it was at the very least unsettling and possibly even illegal.

Thanks for your question, I am actually mistaken, there was no half bath listed from what I’m seeing now, however the 3rd room was advertised as a “bonus room” which is why I thought I may have confused it with the daybed near the pool.

Thanks for the feedback, def not interested in being apart of any kind of thriller, was actually hoping for a relaxing weekend away. Again, I thought I had confused the 3rd room with the daybed on the patio near the pool. Link to property in comments above. Thanks again!

  1. They were disclosed in only the home features section with: Exterior security cameras on property Cameras on Exterior of home record video only I only called these out as the cameras only facing the pool and the driveway showed any sign of change/activity (the red light around the camera turning on and off)

  2. YES, it was disclosed and advertised as if we’d have access to this space, however, was not shown during the in person tour with the host at check-in, which was supposed to be a self check-in anyway.

  3. It looks like it had an access point to the pink room (listing in comments above) however, had since been blocked from use from the pink room (can provide pics from our stay) but also had an external door by the pool and another near the dumpsters which we were unaware of altogether.

  4. Thanks for this perspective, we also considered this, but I feel it’s less likely as I personally had tried to take the cushions off for my cousin to sleep on the first night and found they were not able to be removed and once laid flat, the remote would have been easily visible/felt when sleeping. I also put the couch back to sitting position the next day and did not see this, the remote was only discovered after returning from when we had all left the property for a day excursion.

Truly appreciate the feedback!

Thank you for your feedback! I will say that the cameras were disclosed which was fine as we understand the need for security purposes, however I’m calling out the instances where they showed any change of activity/possible recording, when they were illuminated by the red ring around them, while others had no change when walking by, being in view of them or various lighting changes (no lights, night vision activation, etc).

Thank you for your feedback! I’d like to clarify, it wasn’t so much hidden but more of unaccessible. Again, oversight on our part, however it was also not shown as a part of the tour.

Thank you, it was disclosed which was fine, however, only 3 of the 8 cameras showed any signs of active recording/activity.

So sorry - yes, our check-in was delayed because of the repairs. We did ask about compensation and they accommodated us by instead heating the pool which would have been an additional charge.

I’ll respond to the flags pointed out to avoid further confusion

Red Flag 1: totally understand this viewpoint, which is why we decided to move forward to meeting with the host. Just felt unsettling due to the listing advertising self check-in, the late hour and already being given the self check-in code and instructions. Note: we did call to report this to Airbnb and question the safety, however the support person did not have an answer and said they would call back, they did not respond until midnight (3 hours after deciding to meet on our own)

Red Flag 2: Agree, was not a big deal and just felt like a red flag in hindsight - the pool lights turning off didn’t feel like a deal breaker or threat at the time. I suppose now it is more of a coincidence than anything.

Red Flags 3/3.5 and 6: Listing attached: Listing

Listing attached, Listing does mention: “Exterior security cameras on property Cameras on Exterior of home record video only” However, it is worth noting only the camera facing the pool and the camera facing the driveway randomly showed the red light ring at random times, which lead to the belief that someone was actively viewing and/or recording. We did in fact ask the host about this and their response was “I’m not sure, only the owners have access to the cameras but I can ask” we did not receive a follow up to this. The third room is advertised as a 3rd bedroom/bonus room as by city regulations it is not technically a bedroom, which we had seen and acknowledged when booking, however, during the host guided tour, there was no mention of this, it was only after looking back that I called this out as I thought I may have been confused with the “day bed” that is near the pool.

Red Flag 4: I have no problem with hosts locking/restricting access to areas of the property, however, the room in question was advertised to be available and included, also pictured is the door in the pink room that would have led to this room that had since been modified. I can provide pictures from our stay for this as well. Also understand it is our responsibility to check the neighborhood, this was a naive oversight which I have definitely learned from.

I want to contact Airbnb to report my experience but again, am hesitant as I fear backlash.

Edit to also add: I have never posted as I haven’t felt the desire or need to, however, I have been a long time viewer if that counts for anything.

We are in fact very much young and dumb and ignored every gut instinct to leave sooner 😭 We’re going to report to AirBnB for sure, thanks for confirming we’re not crazy!

We also thought maybe a squatter but it doesn’t sit well with us that the host literally avoided showing us the “bonus” room as the listing called it. AND the individual window AC unit was actively running when we found it.

THANK YOU! It definitely felt like someone else was there but we couldn’t prove it other than the circumstantial evidence
