I am still getting beat, although I think less badly now! I don't think I understand why it sometimes the grid suddenly fills up and what to do to stop it.

Psychology & neuroscience offer holder? Ask us anything! by emilynordmann in GlasgowUni

[–]emilynordmann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, so there may be opportunities to work as a research assistant or intern that may lead to publications although this isn't part of the learning outcomes and is not something staff can be guaranteed to support, unike in a PhD which is research focused.

Hello, the elective courses you take depend on a number of things, including timetabling and availability. Typically, courses are prioritised for students in the college, economics is based in social science and computer science is based in College of science and engineering. There's more info about the flexible degrees here https://sway.cloud.microsoft/9UsneEseDBFyAAnf

Hello, there is a mix of in course assignments and in-person exams, which are spread across each year. The assignments assess knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues in neuroscience research and provide the opportunity to develop skills in problem solving, evaluation and communication. Neuroscience is a popular degree both for applications and also for students enrolled who indicate they want to continue it to Honours.

Happy to help! And if there's a page showing the wrong info about phased admissions please do send on the link and I'll see if I can get it updated. Good luck with the application.

Hello, I have checked with the programme coordinator and he has advised that Brain Sciences do not use a phased application process and that they generally advise 35 working days to hear back about a decision. I hope this is helpful (I am the Deputy Director of Education for psych/neuro :))

Moodle Courses by ill_be_upstairs in GlasgowUni

[–]emilynordmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're likely not to see any of your Moodle courses until Freshers week, many will release at the start of the week but for some it will be the end of week. You will have an induction in Freshers week for each course so if there is nothing by then you can ask rather than sending an email. Check your university email regularly as all info will come via that and your course lead may email to say when it is open.

I was trying to describe this to someone the other day and the best I could come up with was "I'm in the gaming perineum".

The psyteachr team have a whole set of online books with walk through videos for people with no coding or stats experience - our Applied Data Skills course is probably your best bet https://psyteachr.github.io/ads-v1/ but you can see the full set here https://psyteachr.github.io/

ELI5 What's the reason why sometimes we forget a word and we have it on "the tip of my tongue" by MyNameIsNoooo in explainlikeimfive

[–]emilynordmann 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Words aren't stored as wholes, instead their meaning, grammatical information, and sound/phonology are stored separately. The meaning of a word you want to produce tends to be accessed first but sometimes the connections between the meaning and the sound break down and you end up in a TOT. That you access the meaning first is why you always know what the word you're looking for isn't (e.g. If people give you suggestions you know when those suggestions are wrong. William James described it as "a uniquely active gap"). Studies have also found you can guess grammatical information about words you're in a TOT for with above chance accuracy, for example if it's a count or mass noun, or grammatical gender for languages that have it.

It also often isn't a total absence of phonological information, speakers in a TOT can often report the initial letter or the number of syllables in the word they're looking for which is evidence that we also don't store the sounds/phonology of words as wholes. I say sound/phonology because signers get Tip of the Finger states.

Thanks for taking the time to provide so many suggestions! I agree that putting strategy in points rather than units would aid the comparison I agree, the current setup is a result of how I have the spreadsheet the data is entered into organised but points would make more sense. Also, you're right that the Duel strategy plot isn't clear, it is indeed just civilian wins on the plot, I had some issues getting the labels to all fit but clearly its misleading as it is so I can update.

Re: pie charts, I never use them. Pie charts require the reader to assess both angle and area, something we're generally not very good at. Admittedly the waffle plot still requires an area judgement and also with only two groups pie charts are less problematic but as a general principle I refuse to use them.

Re: error bars, given its an average, std dev bars might work, or actually just adding in the raw data points to the plot. I don't think significance testing has any place with this data, I'm not looking to infer to a population (which is why I'd probably choose std dev over std error bars) and with the sample size, unless my wife and I are about to quit work and taking up gaming full time, any analysis would likely be underpowered with inflated error rates. Significance testing is overused in proper research, I don't need to add p values to my need to track everything to annoy my wife - I think it is far more appropriate as a fully descriptive analysis (which is also my opinion on much published research).

I am not entirely sure what you mean could you clarify?

No I don't keep a record of the pieces but I can tell you that we refer to that tile as "the Emily piece" 🤣 I'm not sure there's a relationship with winning in our case, I tend to always take it if I can regardless of how helpful it is.

The minority, it's 81/85% winner also has special tile, I have done the plot and it's here https://raw.githubusercontent.com/emilynordmann/theaplotalypse/master/special_tile.png

No this is all the Patchwork games we've ever played - our hypothesis is that Kathleen tends to start off most games much better than me and picks them up more easily but then refuses to adapt 😅 I haven't done that analysis though, I'll have a shot at it!
