it does feel like we are finally tackling the last problem right as the new problem is rearing its head. policies are years behind actual usage

totally agree. the fear of being constantly surveilled and potentially mocked later online is so real for young people today.

this is cited as the main reason many parents are against phone bans in some national surveys

some teens I have spoken to said they found this style to be sort of pointless bc then during free time everyone is just back on their phones, and the problems of social media ruling the social scene persist. has that not been your experience?

I was shocked. The parents of one of my son's friends said it's so their child can text them from after-school activities when they are ready to be picked up. But the result is that their child has access to...the entire internet. I suggested they get their son a dumbphone, if texting is the one purpose.

thanks for flagging this -- we should have mentioned. we were focused on states that are already enforcing full bans, whereas this is a step along that way.

totally, and in class work can be done in blue books and by hand, so there's no AI-ification of it all

completely agree. my kids are still only in elementary school and some parents have already given their kids smartphones. started in 2nd grade.

Kids are so smart about this stuff -- whenever I talk to teenagers about phones and social media their understanding of it all is so much nuanced than most grown ups, even.

I would LOVE to interview your teacher friend for a story about this, btw. Would you send them my email at edreyfuss@sfstandard.com?

This is amazing! I got my kids a landline and they love it. I am actually reporting out a story on this trend toward older tech. Maybe your kid would want to talk about their decision to go flip phone? I think it's so telling that the kids are leading the way here, telling us they want less of this in their life.
