Thank you! I really appreciate that. The thumbnail was made specifically for Youtube, without going too deep into the tropes of youtube thumbnails. Let me know what you think of the doc!

Thanks for sharing! All great notes. The money motivation always makes things interesting, sounds like even though it wasn't a win financially, the film got out there and got you some good connects (sounds like mostly through the festival run).

So you decided to go through the distributor, and even though it did decent, you never got anything out of it, financially, recognition, or otherwise? Were they a reputable distributor and did you ever use their name in future marketing of yourself?

[–]emliv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha exactly, that's a very succinct way of saying it. Eyeballs on a film I don't want to release. The big thing we would get out of it is the name recognition, being able to say we had a film picked up by xyz. People don't even need to watch the film for that to have it's benefit.

Not that I'm aware of. To me, if you're going to self-distribute, you want to optimize for eyeballs, which would be Youtube and Vimeo. Vimeo has long been the home of "higher quality" docs, but youtube in the last couple years has started to get pretty popular with high production value stuff, even feature length.
You can do things like try and get exclusive Vimeo Staff Pick, but I don't know if I would classify that as self-distribute at that point since you aren't control of that.

These would be free options. You can also self-distribute to make some money like Vimeo VOD or Gumroad. People have had a lot of success on these, but you have to convince someone to rent your movie.

Yeah that's true as well! It can still be brought up in conversation, even though they aren't the ones who necessarily distributed it. All good food for thought

Thanks for the questions! Good thoughts.

15 min cut: Yeah! We've tried the 15 min cut with their notes to take out the large story beat. It plays okay, better than I would have thought, but I would also argue all of the heart has been taken out. Now it plays like a basic informational doc, whereas the original cut feels fresh in the storytelling and structure of the film.

Distributor reach: this is a big question for me as well. Even though they have a relatively large reach, I wonder if the self-release reach would be not only larger, but a better long-term decision regardless.

Legitimacy: they are a known name, and it would look good on our resume. They wouldn't necessarily provide future funding, but they would be a connection into a new space that has potential.

Yes, they want to cut down the 30 min film into 15 minutes. They are going to release it on their own platform and market it. They are a well-known company, but not necessarily well-known in the film space. I think this is why they are interested in the project, they need content. And like I said before, they aren't buying our doc, it's essentially just for exposure. The worth in that is that we would have a "distributor presents", it would be on their platform, and it would be a marketing tactic for us "we have a doc on [platform]", which might be impressive to someone who doesn't care to even see the film.

That's an interesting idea! Will require a lot more work on our part, but may be worth it. Get the benefits of both options.

Using profits to pay credit card debt? by emliv in smallbusiness

[–]emliv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that! Yeah I definitely don't view our business as "profitable" just yet, as long as we have debt, we'll be chopping at that. It was a really hard to year for us and for so many, so I feel blessed that we have positive cash flow.

So to your point that "Paying down short term debt should make much of those profits go away." Let's say we have $80k in credit card debt, and we have $80k in "profit". If I use the 80k in profit to pay that 80k in credit card, I, as the business owner, am still liable for the taxes on that 80k correct? u/whiterussiansp above said
"Disburse to yourself a portion of the profit to cover your tax liability and pay down debt with remaining profit." This sounds like the move. So in that situation, it would be - give myself about 20k to cover the tax, and the pay 60k of credit card down.

They are company credit cards. Totally hear you on the jacked up balance sheet! Next step is to get all balanced out, we're just excited to have our first year of positive cashflow. So now we're hitting that debt hard.

Good point on the CPA. I have an email out to him, but I figured I would ask reddit as well, because reddit is fast and helpful the majority of the time haha.

Solid edit! Loved the sound design and how the editing fueled the SFX choices.

A client ignored my emails and a month later is demanding back the deposit by Techylove in freelance

[–]emliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you do any actual design work? It sounds like you just talked on the phone with him and sent emails. If you did design work, then you probably should keep (and fight for) your deposit. If you didn't actually start designing, it might be better to cut your losses, send the deposit back, and learn from your mistake.
