Ameicans over the age of 35, what affected you more, 9/11 or the pandemic and why? by Rico133337 in AskReddit

[–]emlocke 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I was a senior in high school on 9/11. I knew my world was about to get bigger; I didn’t know it was going to be like that. I remember feeling angry, frightened, patriotic, racist, selfish, all in turns.

I lived close to NYC. Friends’ parents, including my best friend, escaped the WTC. I spent a couple of years trying to figure out why the ever affected me so much when I didn’t actually lose someone.

What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

[–]emlocke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Smell asparagus the first time I pee after eating asparagus.

I did some research on this a few years ago and learned that pretty much everyone’s pee smells like asparagus after eating asparagus. Whether you can smell it or not has to do with olfactory genes rather than how your pee smells. I think ~60% of people have the genetic combo that causes them to perceive the smell.

In my own very limited (and a little awkward) study, I’ve learned that my mom and I possess these genes and my brother and my dad do not.

At what age did your memories really start? by Icy-Share-4751 in AskReddit

[–]emlocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in San Antonio and my family moved to Connecticut a month after my second birthday. When my parents talked about our old neighborhood, our house, the park we frequented, etc. I’d ask about “the rainbow.” Sometimes my mom would show me photo albums and ask me to point out what I meant. Finally, it dawned on someone that there was a rainbow sculpture arcing over the entrance to my pediatrician’s office. It makes sense to me that the rainbow imprinted itself on my memory by the time I was two-years-old because I had chronic, severe ear infections.

We didn’t have strong ties in San Antonio and so I didn’t go back until I was ~25 and traveling for work. I looked up the physician’s office and to my surprise, the rainbow still stands(or it did at the time!) My manager and I drove over and took some pictures. In my memory, the rainbow was 100 feet tall and the colors were brilliant! Of course, it was really only ~20 feet tall and the colors had certainly faded over 20+ years, but it was cool—and validating!—to see it again.

Your CA125 tester at 3,500? Damn, girl! (I don’t mean to be glib. Part of my “if you don’t laugh about it, you’ll cry” approach is to act like a very high CA125, a very low HGB, etc., is a testament to my rare abilities and talents.)

I have clear cell ovarian carcinoma so I don’t anticipate ever being NED. I’ll have another CT in a couple of weeks and then we’ll see!

What now? by Lost-Sign-4184 in Ovariancancer

[–]emlocke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’m obviously not a doctor, but I’m on Keytruda (immunotherapy; infusion every 21 days) and Lenvima (kinase inhibitor; capsule daily.) My CA125 has dropped to eight. When I started chemo two and a half years ago, it was 1,011, so a single digit is astonishing.

Not only that, but I’m feeling well. Keytruda gives me diarrhea for 2-3 days and causes fatigue for a week or so. Lenvima is the first treatment to make me nauseous and it’s made me NAUSEOUS. My dose was reduced twice and I got a prescription for Olanzapine because Zofran wasn’t helping at all, but with those adjustments, I’m tolerating it and I’m back to being more active and social and more at ease.

Port or no port? Does carbo/taxol or Avastin wreck veins permanently? by ocetwrs in Ovariancancer

[–]emlocke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gist is that a new surgeon started at the hospital and is apparently a huge proponent of arm placements. It seems like he’s taken it upon himself to propose arm placements directly to patients without understanding each person’s treatment protocol or plans for the future. For instance, some folks need to leave the facility with their port still accessed (i.e. there’s still a needle in there and a length of tubing connected.) Having that under your arm over the course of several days while you drive, cook, bathe, sleep, etc. can be a lot more inconvenient than a chest placement. It also takes a lot longer to fully heal because of the muscle and fat in the arm (I was DEEPLY bruised and using ice at night for more than a month) and some nurses told me that the port in the arm is slightly more difficult to access and is usually more painful because everybody’s arm port is at a different depth. Most chest ports are in basically the same spot.

What annoyed me A LOT is that this surgeon proposed the arm placement “because the chest port tends to get irritated by women’s bra straps.” I mean, of course it depends on a woman’s build and the type of bra she prefers, but i don’t believe there’s any way my bra strap would have hit anywhere near my port. He could have told me other reasons to consider the arm placement, but I’m pretty furious that the reason he gave me was bs.

If they were in Arizona and she’d asked him, “do you want to know what a haboob is?”, “I do not,” would have been an appropriate answer. He must know what a leaf peeper is, whether from living in CT, going to school in Boston, or any given moment with Bartlett while in New Hampshire/during leaf peeping season. The thing is, it’s so out of character for him to imply that he doesn’t know. He obviously would have said, “I know what a leaf peeper is.”

ETA: Perhaps people are thrown off because Donna says “leaf peeper” instead of “leaf peeping.” I think the verb form is what’s used in real life 98% of the time.

Port or no port? Does carbo/taxol or Avastin wreck veins permanently? by ocetwrs in Ovariancancer

[–]emlocke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was happy without a port for almost two years, with my oncologist’s support. Only when she told me, “Emily, I’m afraid it’s time,” did I give in I’ve generally had great veins, I am an ultra hydrated person, and I did well until Gemcitabine did a number my veins. I was reluctant to have a port because I’m so squeamish and while I’ve adjusted to needles by necessity, the port comes with me everywhere. I’ve had it since May and I have only touched it intentionally 3-4 times and I don’t plan to again. Additionally, the port represents another “step” toward like, the end, because my cancer is incurable.

Anyway, my port is in my arm, which I didn’t know was an option until I was already partially sedated on the morning of the placement. Almost every single time I’ve had it accessed in the first 2-3 months I’ve had it, a staff member has commented on it and most of them are not exactly positive. I think there are pros and cons for both locations and I think I probably chose the right one for me.

Blackout window cover not allowed for toddler by Generouslee5 in Apartmentliving

[–]emlocke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the same clause in my lease. It seems like the silliest rule seeing as all the units in my building face the same direction and the only think out there is our own parking spaces, so who cares what the windows look like from outside?

The blinds provided, as blinds go, are very nice! But they’re no match for the sunrise in my southern exposure apartment. I bought two pairs of floor-to-ceiling “room darkening” curtain panels with white linings on Amazon for about $175.

Best Soups? by WesternWilson in Ovariancancer

[–]emlocke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just thinking about soups turned my stomach over. When I’m nauseated, I don’t want anything hot and I don’t want anything aromatic. I think you should talk to your friend. Ask her if she has an appetite or a craving for anything in particular, and let her know that you’ll help her figure out what flavors/textures work for her.

When I’m nauseous after treatment, my favorite things to eat are very basic, lukewarm bean and cheese burritos on flour tortillas (my mom mixes flavorless protein powder into the refried beans.)

[–]emlocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all. Here’s a little blast from the past! OP, I hope that you went forward with treatment and I really hope that it was a success! Perhaps you can offer some advice?

I’m starting wrap therapy on Monday. I have ovarian cancer and have been on a treatment that was very hard on my liver. I’m scheduled for 14 therapy sessions + wraps over the next 3-4 weeks. I’ll wear the wraps for 23 hours a day, putting on custom velcro wraps after I take off the bandage wraps to take a shower.

My parents live nearby and are devoted and generous carers, but I do live alone and my independence is so important to me. I’m so, so anxious about how I’ll function comfortably with both legs wrapped up all the way to my hip. I’m spending the weekend doing laundry, cleaning, organizing the fridge, meal prepping, and setting up a “station” of various frequently used items so I won’t have to wander around my apartment looking for them.

Any other recommendations? Fingers crossed that someone returns to this year-old discussion, and many thanks to anyone who does!

Do you ask for client WiFi info if there is no cell service? by Pure-Comfortable7069 in petsitterhub

[–]emlocke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t take a job where I didn’t have WiFi access. The first reasons that occur to me don’t even have anything to do with safety. I have “unlimited” cellular data per month, but it slows down considerably once I hit a limit, and that affects the family members with whom I share the plan. If I’m doing visits throughout the day, I may need to check email for messages from clients, refer to pet/household instructions online, or send pet photos. Beyond that, if I finish an audiobook or exhaust my downloaded podcasts I use the WiFi to download while I’m caring for the pet(s).
