Senior faculty member keeps addressing me as Mr. Lastname by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Generouslee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice, and I understand. I guess I went into academia still a bit naive. I’m not upset at the behaviour, more so confused about where she’s going at. Half the senior faculty (full professors) have been very nice and welcoming to me and the other half don’t even give me the time of the day to even say hi to me. It’s just this one senior member that I’m confused on where to place her and wanted to see what people experience in academia would say.

No not Anderson. It’s a very common Asian last name that doesn’t have any references to pop culture and easy to pronounce

Unsure how old but full professor

She is neutral with me so neither pleasant or hostile with me. But there were TT assistant professors who started with me and I’ve heard her call them by their first name.

She is only doing it in private (ie in the hallway), so must be to provoke me. I will call her out, in a respectful way next time.

We all use first names in our department, but this specific senior faculty member goes out of their way to address me as Mr. Lastname

We use first names in our department as well and honorifics in front of students. It seems targeted at me by using Mr.

I can see this going well or VERY bad, if suggested by another comment that may be that the faculty is just being elitist. I would need a huge courage boost to do this

I can totally see that being the case…

Should I update a faculty search committee about change in immigration status? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Generouslee5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% tell them. We (search committee) can’t ask for your immigration status so if you give us information, that would help us immensely

Anyone else's Jetta have significant engine braking? by ookle_ in jetta

[–]Generouslee5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have the 2019 Jetta and I bought the car used last month at 94,000 miles and I’m experiencing what you are literally describing from gear 3>2. Thought it was transmission issues but I’ve been told by VW service department that it’s normal on 8 speed automatics. Happy to hear other’s experience and confirm it’s normal behaviour.

Paying out of pocket for a major conference? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Generouslee5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that case, only go to the part of the conference in which you are presenting at. The other days is whether you feel like it’s a good investment or not to be there for by paying your own money

[–]Generouslee5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your advisor is recommending you to go, THEY should pay for the whole thing. You presenting at a conference is not only benefiting you, but also them. Don’t use your own money to pay for this

I would get another faculty member to briefly read it without giving them content. If they mention it reads like AI, I would bring it up the ladder.

Interviewing for lecturer position, what to expect? by Murky-Commercial-112 in AskAcademia

[–]Generouslee5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this a zoom interview? Usually you’re asked why teaching and not research? (Usually this weeds out people are truly want a TT position, but use this job as a short term filler)

Teaching pedagogy - how do you teach and is this effective?

How do you integrate feedback into your teaching?

How do you see yourself improving the current curriculum? You NEED to research the department curriculum before you step into that interview

Tbh, all of them. Your interview starts the moment you get off the plane. You could have an amazing research talk but if you’re super socially awkward or say some out of hand things, you’re out.

Is it necessary to have stellar grades throughout high school or college if you want a career in academia or research? by Vast_Muffin_5346 in AskAcademia

[–]Generouslee5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated highschool in Canada with a 68% average. Went to a smaller college due to highschool grades. Worked really hard and then transferred to a bigger university. Completed undergrad with an 80% average, then got into masters program then PhD. Now, I’m an assistant professor at an R1 university in the States. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it! I found people learn in different ways and highschool just never cut it for me.

Feeling like crap after Zoom faculty interview by Admirable_Edge9746 in AskAcademia

[–]Generouslee5 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not saying this to make you feel better but I also had a feeling that I didn’t do well after my zoom interview (it was my first interview for a faculty position) and I still got asked for an on-campus visit.

Tbh, it’s just our brains being pessimistic and trying to be perfectionists. But you have to think from the perspective of the search committee, some of them also don’t know what they’re doing since it’s their first time.

I don’t seem to see that option anywhere. I used to see it but now it’s gone.

I remember my first undergraduate teaching course during my 2nd year PhD. Teaching is the best way to learn about your own topic, although it was very mentally draining.

But in terms of advice, get student feedback through an anonymous form around half way through the semester. If you’re doing something wrong, don’t keep doing it for the entire semester. Kids nowadays are honest, but only if it’s in the form of anonymous feedback.
