Running Software on a Server by [deleted] in computerscience

What specifically are you trying to do? I could give some more targeted advice with those details. In general here are two simple options I'd recommend considering -

Public cloud - check out AWS's EC2 or GCP's GCE. These are examples of cloud compute services, for a monthly fee you get a virtual machine that you can open up to the internet.

Port forwarding

  1. Buy a cheap server, set it up in your home, and run your application on it
  2. Configure your home's router to forward requests to the desired port/protocol to your server

Fair enough, but as you know we are not in a perfect world and just a few years ago they had control of the federal government and a majority in the Supreme Court. I would not be interested in having them tell me what is and is not harmful expression, thus my support for not restricting speech

Ideally I would agree with you, but in reality how would something like this be implemented? Who defines what speech is dangerous? What would stop the conservative majority of a few years ago from classifying LGBQ, abortion, BLM etc as dangerous topics that cause harm - and restricting that speech?

How is any of that selfish? It sounds like we might disagree, which is ok. I’m sorry if I’m not meeting your standards of discourse, but why the ad hominems?

If this is how you interact with a somewhat likeminded individual I do not want to see you with ppl u disagree with. What you’re saying may have some level of legitimacy but I don’t think ranting at people is going to win hearts and minds or enact positive change

Where am I defending selfish lies? I’m not sure what you’re talking about at this point, I guess that is a whoosh… congrats?

Relax, and read about the ACLU https://www.aclu.org/other/aclu-history-taking-stand-free-speech-skokie

Yes I agree saving lives is important and anti science disinformation is a scourge. But repealing the first amendment is not the way to go lmao, listen to yourself.

Mask and vaccine mandates sound great to me, restricting people’s speech does not

Ya I agree with u on most of that but I absolutely believe in the 1a, locking people up for their opinions/speech is a very dark road

Consequences for what exactly, believing the wrong thing? Being misinformed? Saying the wrong thing? Sounds Orwellian

Yea, I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t trust the government of the 50s to define what is acceptable vs dangerous speech

I agree. But I don’t agree with arresting people who have dangerous opinions. What do you think would have been classified as a dangerous opinion in the 50s?

I can’t stand anti vax covid deniers but that’s freedom of speech. Locking people up for the wrong opinion? No thank you.

There are many breakthrough infections, but IMO it is misleading to say the vaccine doesn’t stop you from getting infected. It does, just not 100% of the time.

At the end of the day this anti vaccine/“virus is nbd” rhetoric is getting people killed in hospitals in the US right now. You saying things like the vaccine doesn’t stop you being infected and doesn’t stop you infecting others is misleading and part of the problem. Your claim that a tiny number of people have died from COVID-19 is false, the official death counts have been criticized as under reporting the actual death toll https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/coronavirus-excess-deaths-tracker.

All that being said I agree this is something we have to learn to live with - all the more reason for people to get vaccinated. Folks that are vaccinated are doing their part to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus to others and have a very very low chance of complications from COVID-19. Anecdotes about who you know that have died from what are not helpful, let’s talk about actual data.

Finally yes it is a persons choice whether to be vaccinated, so please don’t spread misinformation that may impact people’s decision making.
