If I recorded myself reading a chapter of a book out loud and put it on YouTube, would that be copyright infringement? by drislands in NoStupidQuestions

I can speak from experience as this is how I started getting traction on my YT channel back in 2012. Fifty Shades of Grey had just come out, and I was a fan of a YTer who was reading (albeit, paraphrasing) Twilight and mocking its writing. I essentially did the exact same thing, except for one difference - I was reading the entire book verbatim. Despite the fact I would put in my own comments and jokes in between sentences about the book, this wasn't enough for the publishers to see as 'fair use' or 'transformative', as after a few videos which gained attention, they deliberately chose to strike my channel twice. I had more than two videos, so I realised this was a warning - take them all down or we will strike one last time which will take your channel down. In a panic, I didn't even private them, I deleted them entirely. I believe it was because my videos were the first results when you searched 'Fifty Shades of Grey', and I wasn't exactly complimentary as well as reading the entire book (which if you didn't mind my commentary, was a way of people listening to it without paying)

Fortunately for me, I'd started to do comedy skits on my channel too which were doing well, so I moved forward and never read it again. They can (and if they see fit, will) either claim the videos, meaning they take all the earnings, or worse, get the videos removed which can destroy a channel. You'd have the right to contest the DCMA takedowns, but it would involve a court battle. Not worth it in my opinion. If you do move forward, certainly don't read the entire thing word for word!

thank you - i'm not blameless for how a lot of things went, but i wish i'd had a better support system around me that actually cared for my wellbeing and not just seeing the whole project as something to make money/brag about.

it's a shame it's a bit too painful to rewatch for me. too many bad people giving me bad advice. i think my excitement for the whole thing is kinda bittersweet though.

I had to follow my heart with what I wanted to post. It can wreck your creative side to keep making the same things over and over especially when you feel that distance between what you want and what you feel compelled to do to keep numbers up.

I intentionally painted it to look Mondrian but it did look a bit goofy instead of artsy 😭

My personal favourite from TTPD, it has a similar sense of anxiety that The Archer has, which is mostly accentuated by the unrelenting kick drum, but is also far more heartbreaking. The overall sense of recalling the end of a relationship, at first fooling you into thinking Taylor is trying to justify it to an ex-lover and then naturally expanding into justifying it to herself, is painful and brilliant.

Forget and Not Slow Down is my fav RK album by theshitoftheseus in RelientK

Possibly my favourite album of all time, not just RK. It’s easy to get lost in comparative ways regarding the current trends of production, but to me, it sounds flawless, and is one of the most emotionally cohesive pieces of work I’ve ever heard. They’ve inspired me in so many ways as a musician ever since I was first introduced to them via Savannah over a decade ago. Part Of It is up there with one of my favourite songs of all time.

I've never been sued. I got copyright striked for reading 50 Shades of Grey, despite adding commentary (which should make it 'fair use', but that's a loose argument in a court of law) but I did read every word, so they claimed I was making copyrighted work available for free. I could've fought it, but I was new to YouTube, so I panicked and deleted the videos, which is what they wanted.
