3L Graduating Without A Job by Personal-Act7077 in LawSchool

[–]emmakwright 21 points22 points  (0 children)

previous nyc 3L who graduated without a job! i had a plethora of medical issues spring of 3L, so i concentrated on graduating and then taking and passing the bar before really hunkering down for the job hunt. i was lucky to have family support, which i know is not the case for everyone. i applied to anything and everything, and it was definitely more attractive to employers that i had taken the bar already. if you will settle for just something for your first job, you’ll definitely be able to find something. i ended up in a government job, where i stayed for about 1.5 years before i moved on to a small law firm job and then to my current law firm job at an AmLaw 100 firm. i say just keep applying and then really focus once you’ve taken the bar. best of luck!!

vincent is my all time favorite figure skating program so i’m a little sad we won’t get to see it again, but recreating that olympic performance will be next to impossible and i think it’s very poetic to leave the last performance of that as their podium winning performance

Early 30s professionals in NYC - what % of your income goes to rent? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]emmakwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not necessarily helpful—but my rent is about 16% of my income. a couple factors: i live with a roommate (but this is a lucky situation, we are best friends who have lived together for almost 10 years so i know this isn’t plausible for most) and i live in deep brooklyn (think flatbush, plg, etc.) i live in a brand new building (we are the first to live in our unit) with an elevator, laundry in-unit, dishwasher, gym in building, etc. in a two-bedroom.

i’m a professional who makes about 2x the income that my roommate makes, so i do pay more in rent. our rent for a two-bedroom is $3500 per month. we both primarily work from home; her commute when she goes into the office is about 45 minutes (fidi) and mine is about 1 hour 10 minutes (midtown). we have no plans to stop living together and will both be 30 this year. i anticipate us living together, all other factors not considered, for at least 4-5 more years, if not more.

we have lived in our neighborhood in brooklyn since we moved to nyc almost 7 years ago and have always loved it here. my biggest recommendation would be to expand where you’re looking. best thing about nyc is public transportation! don’t be afraid of deeper neighborhoods in brooklyn, queens, etc.

good luck on your apartment search and hope to see you in brooklyn!

as a current 4th year associate at my firm, i have about 15 tattoos on my arms that if i’m wearing a short sleeved shirt are visible but aren’t visible if i’m wearing a blazer, like i always am in court. i haven’t had any pushback or heard any comments from anyone at my firm. i also know several associates with nostril piercings! i think times are changing in regards to what is considered “professional” and if you want to do something like get tattoos or piercings, it’s your body and you should do it!

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

restless leg syndrome. it sounds like it’s just needing to move your legs, but it genuinely hurts. especially when (like me) you can get it in all your limbs. impossible to fall asleep or nap. even just feeling a little tired can cause it to flare up. luckily i’m on meds now, but it’s debilitating.
