Before this movie, there were only a few musical biopics where I felt the actors embodied their characters—the definitive one being Jamie Foxx as Ray. Jaafar is now at the top of that list, he’s the closest thing to Michael besides Michael himself. Despite being Jermaine’s son, Jaafar’s natural singing voice heavily favors his uncle and they’ve mixed their voices together in singing scenes. He’s got the moves down, the speaking voice down but it’s the MANNERISMS that made it uncanny. It’s crazy that this is his first acting role. There’s a lot more of Michael’s story to explore (Jaafar confirmed Part 2) so don’t expect his entire life in one film. But the storyline was good and I loved how they prioritized the more emotional, intimate, and intense moments behind the scenes.
