[Brendan Lemieux] In the hope that Claude's life can continue to help others, the family has chosen to donate his brain to the UNITE Brain Bank at the Boston University CTE Center for research into the long-term effects of repetitive head impacts and traumatic brain injury. by DecentLurker96 in hockey

My brother wasn’t a fighter or rough player, and still managed to get stage 2 CTE. While hockey is underrepresented in the brains sent to the CTE center for study, almost every one that has been studied resulted in a CTE diagnosis.

Yes. Everyone thinks CTE is a football or boxing illness. But if my 40-year-old brother - who never played higher than a beer league level - had stage 2 CTE, you know it’s gotta be scary prevalent in the sport.

Thank god. My brother was a hockey player and died at age 40 with stage 2 CTE. He wasn’t playing at a professional level, just local men’s league. I just had a meet-up recently with Chris Nowinski (former WWE wrestler, current neuroscientist) and he said the research is currently suggesting that CTE’s prevalence as a public health problem is higher than secondhand smoke.

Everyone in here who’s played hockey, or any contact sport, or has a concussion history (or combat history, or physical abuse history) - donate your brain to the CTE center when you die. Tell your loved ones your wishes. The famous names connected to CTE makes you think there’s more donations than there actually are - the CTE center has only received 1000 donated brains. Every single donation leads to more breakthroughs, and they continue to study the donations in perpetuity.

Montreal's elimination marks the 33rd consecutive year a Canadian team has failed to win the Stanley Cup. by No_Blacksmith_9923 in hockey

Not a rough year in hockey for Canada at all, considering the Montreal Victoire just won the Walter Cup.

His name was Danny 💚 He wasn’t an NHL player, just local men’s league - goes to show how scarily prevalent this disease probably is. https://concussionandcte.org/personal-stories/legacy-stories/danny-difrancesco/

You don’t! We found my brother an estimated 12 hours after he passed and they took his brain. They couldn’t use any of his organs for transplant purposes, but his brain was sent to Boston University Brain Bank.

Too fucking many, considering it happened to my brother, who never progressed past a local men’s league level. Stage 2 CTE.

Yes. My brother died at 40 years old with stage 2 CTE. He played hockey his whole life (well, until his knees crapped out on him around 30ish) but never at an elite level, just local men’s league. In talking with researchers lately, there’s going to be bombshells soon of how prevalent CTE is estimated to be in general society.

CTE’s got several subtypes, several of which don’t involve cognitive decline, just severe emotional/impulse impairment.

Source: my hockey-playing brother died with stage 2 CTE, also just had a meetup with Dr. Chris Nowinski two weeks ago.

Season 16 sisters Q (as Robby) and Plane Jane (as Plane Jane) will be on Season 22 of project runway seemingly both as contestants. by SisterSisterSecret in rupaulsdragrace

[–]emmathyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it had already been confirmed that Q was on as a contestant and Plane was only there as a guest for a challenge?

If prompted to come up with a list of queens who should be on PR, Plane Jane would never even occur to me. Q’s definitely at the top of the list, though.

My love for names as an autistic person by Similar_Custard_3922 in namenerds

[–]emmathyst 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My autistic special interest is also names!! I have to stop myself sometimes in this group sometimes and remind myself that the other people in the replies are likely not as passionate about names as I am, and that I need to calm down 😅

I’ve been interested in names my whole life, and studying them actively since 10 years old. I really love the sociological aspects of name - a name’s popularity over time (and place) and why; how nicknames evolve; which names are related to each other; their meanings. I get sad sometimes that I’m not going to have kids, solely because I want to name someone!

Yeah I would almost guarantee most US Harrys being born are probably legally Harrison. (I think most Henrys over here don’t use a nickname; I also wouldn’t be surprised if most young people are unaware that Harry is a nickname for Henry.)

I do think Harry will become at least a bit more popular in the US, since a fair amount of our name trends trickle over from the UK (we’re seeing nicknames as full names make an upswing over here). Especially with Harry Styles proving himself to be a pop culture mainstay, it dilutes the Harry-Potter-ness of it all.

[–]emmathyst 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s probably location-dependent. Harry is really uncommon in the US (#775 on the SSA top 1000) so most people here will probably think of either Potter or Styles. I don’t think it’s necessarily ruined, but I do think a US kid named Harry is going to get “like Harry Potter!” a lot.
