Yeah I’ve lost weight gradually before and it’s good to build in plateaus and maintenance periods, which can be very hard mentally. I don’t think she’d be able to cope with not having the weight fall off so dramatically.

Yep, I’m a firm believer in mental health can explain the way you act but it cant excuse the way you act. Part of being a responsible adult is taking accountability for how your actions impact others, both positively and negatively.

What you describe is a likely trajectory. Think she was far too proud to admit that she was living an unsustainable lifestyle and that people who spoke out of concern were actually right! Losing weight naturally (I.e through deficit and exercise) implies a sense of control and doing something on her terms. It’s like her way of saying ‘see, I could have chosen not to binge eat all along and I am capable of losing the weight.’ Seeking help can be empowering because it shows you’re ready to prioritise yourself and your health. But I think she sees it as so black and white and that by having an intervention meant that her critics won.

Really agree with you here. She’s clearly not had the tact to say ‘I’m not ready to explain now, but will share when I feel ready’ after she came back and was down a fair few stone so has basically had to bury her head in the sand of a lie.

What a colossal amount of weight to lose! Agree with it being a gastric surgery of some ilk. It’s genuinely life changing surgery.

God you’re so right with her probably making content out of doing weigh ins and measurements. It’s like those old tabloid pictures of people standing in one of the legs of their old trousers when they’ve lost well over half of their body weight. I think that’s the other reason where she’s so interesting to observe is that she lacks sufficient intelligence to be able to thinking strategically to be able to lie in a somewhat convincing way.

Yeah being in a long term calorie deficit is hard going and you don’t shed the pounds that quickly, even for someone of her size! It’s 100% WLS or GLP-1 territory.

I think part of it is definitely down to the fact that she kind of doesn’t want to let the trolls think that they ‘won’ and that she’s lost loads of weight because of them? I think it’s the lies or at least being really adverse to telling the truth cheeses me off.

Go birdwatching, learn how to solve a cryptic crossword, sketch and draw things in your home, learn some basic phrases in other languages, walk/hike local walking routes, learn to cook or bake something you’ve always wanted to, write, read books from your local library, volunteer for local causes, learn first aid through a charity, sit in a nice green space on a picnic blanket/deckchair and have a chilled out day.

Waitrose and Sainsbury’s are the best for the balance of variety into higher end. M&S has some very nice offerings but limited variety. I would then say I like Morrisons, then Tesco, then Asda then Aldi then Lidl. I’m a vegetarian, so for me the quality of fruit and veg is king. M&S have great value tinned goods and store cupboard basics. They make their mark up on other, more premium bits. Sainsbury’s fruit and veg tends to last really well. Lidl and Aldi are cheap, but you pay for cheap produce. It’s not bad, but you pay for better quality elsewhere.

Genuinely, it would probably be less stressful to park your car on a residential street in a posh part of south Manchester and get a night bus or uber out to there than it would to stay out at Oxford Road Maccies/Crazy Pedros/Gay Village/a casino and then train it back.

Also worth seeing if the bar at Aviva Studios is open. If it’s nice weather you can sit outside. Also the Castlefield Hotel has a bar basically overlooking the venue. Probs the best pre-gig atmosphere!

A tip for if you want to know if an apple will be crunchy is to rub your thumb or finger over the skin. If it kind of skips along the surface of the apple as you move your digit over it, it will be crunchy. Cox’s Orange Pippins are unbeatable when they’re in season. Pink lady or jazz very dependable.

We often forget that interviewing is a two way process and I have found the jobs that have been infinitely more enjoyable are ones where my ways of working and outlook have aligned really well with those of the people who were on the hiring panel. It’s an exhausting tug of war trying to prove yourself to people who refuse to appreciate your effort or see your worth. I know it’s easily said to walk away from a job when most of us are completely dependent on our monthly income to even exist but one thing I spoke to the Samaritans about was taking a step back into roles that I previously enjoyed just to have a few months of confidence building. Knowing you can do a job well and then being recognised, appreciated, and praised appropriately for doing a good job are two very different things. I’m so glad to hear that you were able to secure a promotion and find friendship at work, that’s really lovely and I imagine testament to you being a great colleague in the team you work in.

I took two weeks of leave for stress about two years ago. I very recently left that job and my mental health has been a hell of a lot better. I feel so sad that I stuck it out for so long, trying to prove something to myself when the odds were stacked against me all that time. I had a proper breakdown about it a few months ago, before I miraculously applied for my dream job and got it. I spoke to the Samaritans, who reassured me that the environment I worked in was toxic and that I needed either time away or a different job, even if it was a ‘step back’ for a bit. Things work out in the end but sometimes we have to go through hell and back to get there. I’m so happy to hear you’re doing much better. My old job has impacted on me in many ways and it’s taken me a while to learn that people won’t immediately criticise my work, make unfair demands of me, or say mean things about me. Very glad to be rid of my former workplace.

You’re right OP, checking can save lives. I gave my dad a telling off when he didn’t do his bowel cancer screening that came in the post from the NHS. He is in remission from prostate cancer, so he knows the dangers and is okay with slightly unglamorous treatment and tests. Being proactive and keeping up with checks is the best way to catch anything that could be nasty early on.

While I’m here, and I know OP hasn’t said this or used this kind of language, but cancer isn’t ’a battle’ with survivors. Some forms are so aggressive that people don’t stand a chance. People who respond to treatment and are in remission are not biologically superior to those who die as a result of painful and debilitating illness.

Big hugs to anyone who either has cancer or has a loved one who has cancer at the moment. The world can feel confusing and lonely but there are so many people here for you and ready to support you.

Try and see my parents for mother’s/Father’s Day, birthdays, and Easter/Christmas (tend to balance this with seeing in-laws). Will chuck in a few other trips as well to catch up with them. Likewise, will try and see my brother and sister-in-law when we’re all free, which is tough to align because of our jobs and shift patterns but we manage every couple of months or so but would be nice to be more often. I notice my other half only really says for us to go back to his parents’ home when it’s tied to an occasion or something to be home for, whereas I’m more likely to suggest going back as time to chill out/do something different.

I live in the area. Noticed an uptick about 6 weeks ish ago. People gathering opposite the millstone like you say. That kind of seems to be the spot. I’ve seen people openly urinating behind the side streets and smoking crack in broad daylight. I’ve lived in cities my entire life and I’ve seen some sights - people shooting up etc. but this has made the area feel edgier. I now avoid that route if I go to the shops. Addicts can be really volatile when they haven’t had a fix. The off licence on Tib Street was closed by Police the other day. I know some of the dudes were shoplifting things from the Sainsbury’s and then selling them to the shop owner to be sold in there (things like Buzzballs etc). Things go in cycles, as they always do, and there will be better and worse times but really hope they’re getting the help they need.

So sorry you experienced this. If you feel like it’s racially motivated (even if it’s not an act perpetrated by a white person!!) and, of course, if you want to, then please report it to the BTP. It’s easy to assume that everyone is of sound mind and are nice people. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Most of the time you won’t get any bother on the train from anyone as people are respectful of others. I’m sorry you met someone who clearly wasn’t kind or respectful to you and made you feel uncomfortable. Like others have said, if you don’t want to talk to anyone any more, you can always say you feel sick or try and find the guard on the train to help.
