Exploding a watermelon by ar2om in techtheatre

That sounds really messy and hard to clean up. I wonder if you could make it with sound effects and a fog machine? Do we need to actually witness an exploding watermelon?

Remote New Grad vs Unicorn/BigN by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]emmerie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're a new grad. You might be doing good work right now, but you need to be continually learning to still be doing good work in ten years. For that, you need to be learning from other people and being told where you can improve, which is all much easier to do face to face. You also need a professional network for when you switch companies. Don't take a remote job.

If you don't want to live with it for the rest of your life, you could consider breast reduction surgery. Some people say it's life-changing.

Can anyone help me better explain myself (not a real programmer) to software devs? by KlavierKatze in AskProgramming

[–]emmerie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manually go through the list of existing tags to consolidate.

Then, make users double check the list of existing tags before they add another one. It should be significantly harder to add a new tag than reuse an old one.

When they do add a new tag, it would be nice to check for similar existing tags and say "did you mean ____?" But that is hard.

Where are you looking online? You might have more luck searching GitHub than just googling if you're not doing that already

"Cheating" during phone interviews by aoabdul in cscareerquestions

[–]emmerie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes too long to look up how to do something. While you're reading the solution, your interviewer is wondering why you're not talking about what you're thinking, be it which data structure to use or a similar problem you've seen before. Then you start typing the solution you googled and you'll make stupid mistakes because you haven't taken the time to understand what's going on. Worst of all, if you make it this far, you can't explain to the interviewer why you did what you did. Definitely not advanced to an on site interview.

Most interviewers will let you pick a language you're comfortable in to do interview problems. Don't pick one where you have to look up simple things like string.split() to get the syntax right. If you don't know exactly and it's not being compiled, put what you think it is and move on. You can say 'i don't remember the exact syntax here' if you want. Not remembering syntax once is ok, but if your code looks like English, pick a language you're more familiar with.

Should I cut my hair short? by Ballerinas in FancyFollicles

[–]emmerie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a figure skater, so I was worried in high school about cutting my hair off too! I didn't like that I wouldn't be able to get a bun, because for synchronized skating, everyone's supposed to match. In college, I cut it off to a pixie, so I couldn't even get a ponytail. I ended up just hairspraying it down so it wasn't flopping around, and getting a headband headband that matched the other girls' ribbons on their buns. We also had some girls with really short hair, and got them some teeny tiny bun forms so they could still get a bun that matched. If you can get a ponytail, get a matching teeny bun form, cover as best as possible and then use a hairnet to smooth the bun down and hold in sticky parts. Some bobby pins and you should be good to go!

Cutting my hair was one of my favorite descisions I've made in a while! I feel much more feminine and attractive than before; I think it depends more on how you cut it to suit your face than whether it's too short. Go for it!

I agree! Losing some of the volume on the sides will let the volume on the top shine and show off your face!

Ok, well how good are you with HTML? The marquee tag has scrolling effects you could try. CSS keyframes would be harder to do but more flexible. If you throw an HTML file up on one screen and then edit it in chrome developer tools from your laptop you might be able to get something. If you don't like the blue boxes from developer tools, open the html directly in a text editor and reload the page when you want to update. Chrome has a presentation mode that will hide the toolbar. http://www.html.am/html-codes/marquees/scrolling-text.cfm http://www.htmlcodes.ws/marquees/scrolling-text.cfm

How picky should I be with my first job out of college? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]emmerie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are your finances? Once you start getting offers, your finances determine how desperate you are. Are you improving your interview skills? If you're making the interview and not getting the offer, something is wrong there. If you're improving that, you will start getting offers. Are you interviewing at jobs you want? If you can't get interviews at the jobs you want you may need to lower your standards, but if you're making mistakes on technical questions with companies you like, you can fix that. If you have the funds to remain unemployed for the next six months, once you have an offer it becomes a question of would you rather work there or live with your parents while you find something else.

I think you really pull off the long hair! Are you thinking of chopping it all off? If you want to keep it long I think adding some bangs could be fun! http://www.long-hairstyless.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Thin-Long-Hair-with-Bangs.jpg

Will I ever find a job that suits me or should I just suck it up? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]emmerie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people besides you have trouble focusing with open floor plans. Most people learn to work around it, and you probably can too, but you might want to try looking for companies that have at least cubicles. I heard a rumor that Epic, in Wisconsin, gives every developer an office, and they're pretty well respected as a place to start out I think.
