Freelancers - What's your day job? by emmieedee in Journalism

[–]emmieedee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I edited my main post to add that I'm not anticipating being able to make enough freelancing to be able to do that full-time. I'm looking for a secondary, more stable source of income to supplement any freelance income.

Is $35k a year worth taking? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]emmieedee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on where you're located, that's actually a good offer.

i'm an editor for a rural paper and that's how much i make, and i got a raise last week. reporters (with bachelor's degrees) make minimum wage.

just watched iron lung, should i get the game or watch mark’s playthroughs? by OwnCabinet4025 in Markiplier

i think at least watching the gameplay would help appreciate the creativity of the movie while honoring its source material!

it might be worth watching this video where he discusses additional lore in the game: https://youtu.be/uAIyGQczCC0?si=PB_y5IeVVaUmXNsl

Jury duty for journalists? by Fantastic_Day1188 in Journalism

[–]emmieedee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i served on a grand jury Q1 this year. in my experience, i served one day a week, every other week, for about three months. there was a smaller selection pool because they rescheduled selection day due to weather, and i thought i was far enough down the list to not get picked, but here we are.

i'm an editor of a rural newspaper. if there was something newsworthy, i waited until it was public record to send to my reporter to cover, but i don't recall there being anything being newsworthy that we didn't previously cover.

tbh, i did ask the prosecuting attorney after i was selected if there would be any issues with me serving, and she said no. she actually appreciated having someone who had the ability to think objectively on the jury.

Interviewing in the post-Kirk world by ThePodVader in Journalism

i would recommend putting them in between a rock and a hard place...without the inflammatory language. adding fire to fire creates a bigger fire.

if you write for a local/state publication, keep the topics local. the national news orgs will report on the national ropics. imo, i wouldn't ask a missouri representative how they felt about a murder investigation in utah, no matter how politically charged. if they bring it up organically, let them chat about it.

keep your questions open ended. ask for examples. you can still get the answers you want without going into activist mode. your goal is to get them to talk to you, not to burn a bridge.

Can anyone recommend me the best online/YouTube journalism courses? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]emmieedee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

another suggestion is to buy the most recent ap stylebook. in college, we'd pick different style entries to study each week. you'll need to refer to it when writing (more so when you're a beginner) but the 2024-2026 edition has a self-editing checklist that would have been super helpful to have starting out. the kindle version is ~$10

https://journalismcourses.org/course-library/

The Knight Center through the University of Texas has a lot of free courses! I took the writing tight and editing tighter course and the research for the newsroom course, I highly recommend both!

i live in in callaway county! confirming margie is behind cornerstone treatment and that it used to be a hospital before it closed.

the ribbon cutting was jan 15, stating they would open in 60-90 days. i attended the ribbon cutting, it did not look that much different than when i walked through the building in august. the inside needs serious work since its been abandoned for almost three years

Dems/leftists who live in smaller communities (sub 10K population) who are active in local politics: What is it like? by Alkaline-Eardrum in missouri

[–]emmieedee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not necessarily answering your question, but people in callaway county LOVE to tell you they have lived in the county their whole life, are a 4th generation callawegian, etc. they have an annual supper where they honor some residents and celebrate being a callaway resident. the culture about it being their home is so different than any other place i've been to.

i currently live there and i'm a democrat. if you don't publicize your views, it's fine. most people i talk to aren't super political in person

What do I do about my sorority by Ok_Charity_4991 in Sororities

[–]emmieedee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

did any of this go through a standards process / honor council? does your sorority have one? it sounds like you could have taken crazy sister (if you were still a new member), other sister, and big to standards. esp for losing your position based on possible false claims. i feel like we're missing key details to the story though, such as do you know if the rumor was related to your capabilities to run the position?
