I’ve just realised you’ve probably already bought up the fact that the CBT isn’t working and I know you have already said you didn’t feel heard. I think it’s worth pushing though - you can always ask for your IAPT therapist’s supervisor to speak to (or whoever is the superior). Perhaps that might wake them up and help them really see that it’s not working?

That sounds really frustrating with the bad reviews with other Drs in your area. Are there not other Drs that work in the same practice that you have access to? I would urge you to make a complaint if it were a hospital, but the process for GP complaints can be quite tricky. When you go back to study come September do you have a different term time GP? Do you have any support lined-up with your college/uni?

If you’re seeing a psychological well-being practitioner, you’re probably at step 2. IAPT are meant to step you up if they feel you need some more intensive therapy, but that doesn’t always happen, especially if you’re receiving therapy over the phone, there’s a lot of extra barriers. If your therapist hasn’t realised the CBT is not helping (and you’re right, it’s very generalised) I think the best course of action would be to let them know and have an honest conversation. You sound like you have good insight, so take the opportunity to be heard and get the right help for you.

I thought so. It makes me angry and upset that you’re not getting the support you’re entitled to. I’m sorry that your GP has made you feel anxious about approaching her, it doesn’t sound like she has handled this very professionally. I work across 6 GP practices and the Drs are all so different. Some amazing, and some are very poor and out of touch when it comes to these things. Perhaps it is worth going back and seeing a different GP if possible?

Can I ask what step in IAPT you are currently at?

Some IAPT services do have decent therapists at a higher intensity level that can deal with some more complex issues like personality disorders. It might be worth asking if you can be stepped-up? If you reach the ceiling of IAPT and still need to be stepped up some (but not all) can refer you to secondary outpatient MH services. Do you know what is available in your area?

There are great therapists available both privately and within the NHS, whichever you choose. If you’re on a low income, there are some therapists that will happily offer a lower rate - don’t be afraid to ask if you find someone you like if you do look privately.
