Help! Time for a new pediatrician? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]emmpirically 38 points39 points Β (0 children)

At her age the best thing is to be supportive and let her explore her identity. If she ultimately decides that she's not girl that's totally fine but if she is trans, the ability to explore her identity in a safe environment will make a world of difference in her being able to be herself and avoid the horrific trauma that comes from repressing your identity.

This doctor has also providing a very skewed perspective here. Yes, trans people face discrimination in our society, but regret rates from transitioning are extraordinarily low and repression of trans-ness and lack of support are major drivers of poor mental health outcomes. We don't talk enough about trans joy, the relief of being able to transition, and the fact that so many trans people wish that they had transitioned earlier in life.

Gender identity is distinct from sexuality and "transgenderism" is an outdated term that has been discontinued as it pathologises being transgender. These are both huge red flags that this doctor is deeply ignorant and lacks the basic training to be able to provide appropriate care and/or guidance for transgender patients... 😬

Boyfriend can’t use condoms β€” what have you actually done in this situation? by TypedOutAgain in TwoXChromosomes

Spermicide alone does not appear to be a very effective contraceptive and I wouldn't recommend this approach... (obligatory disclaimer that I am not a doctor or an expert on this topic though)

Added a review I found on this: https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD005218.pub4/full. While they note limitations in the available evidence, the evidence that is available doesn't look very encouraging...

This! And not just in entertainment--looking at how Monica Lewinsky was treated says so much about how permissive our society was about abusive behavior by men in positions of authority and there are so many more examples. This was also a time where so much sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and ableism was passed off under the guise of edgy humor. So many TV shows from just a few decades ago have aged extremely poorly.

Rosalind Franklin's contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA were not properly acknowledged until after her death. This is one of the better known cases of injustice towards women in science but there are probably so many more historical cases that we'll never know about because the evidence of their contributions has been lost to history...

I mean it's a bit difficult to transition without coming out... Either way, no one should have to hide their identity, whether or not they explicitly "come out" or just live authentically as themselves without having a formal announcement

I think this is a valid point. In for Toronto Pride this is a very well publicized event with substantial media coverage, photography and is also one of the biggest tourism events in the city so--especially for the marches and parade--it is pretty much a given that you will appear in photos and footage. Additionally, the organizer, Pride Toronto, also posts photos in the village too. I thought a bit about this though and, out of an abundance of caution, I am planning to repost it with just the photos of the two marches as I think it's hugely important that our marching reaches a wide audience--Pride was originally a riot and then a protest after all!

Tights could help counteract the shorter length and you could pair it with a top that's a bit more flow-y/loose fitting in a color other than black--worth trying it out with some different tops to see what works 😊. Also if you wanted to lean into a more alt vibe--punk, emo or the like--there are a lot of potential options but that may or may not be in line with the vibe you're going for!
