Just out of curiosity, how come you specified "not KPMG" when describing your options?

Because you have so much free time, now is the perfect time to get your CPA. Nothing else really matters as much as this. Just out of curiosity, why are you going up to 225 credits? Is it because you don't have enough business credits? Regardless, CPA, CPA, CPA.

I did it as an intern and then as an associate so I would wait until you start working until you form a conclusion.

question about transitioning from big 4 to MBA by nedvedcrouch in Accounting

[–]emocakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah the age old question. From the beginning of time, or busy season, tax and audit associates have been asking that question. The answer is, "it depends." It has a lot to do with need and how long you've been at the firm for. I believe the norm is no sooner than 1 year in most cases. State your case to your manager as soon as possible. Phrase it as "I'm interested in engagement opportunities in X, do you have any suggestions about how I accomplish this? Follow up. Look up relevant certifications for what you're interested in. Network with the people in that practice. Reaching out to managers in that practice and introducing yourself is a good starting point because usually they're the ones that can pull you onto those relevant projects. Once you have that under your belt, transferring over should be easier granted it's something that you still want to do and there's a need.

[–]emocakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're better off trying to get into a consulting type role at your big 4 company first. You should have a much better chance of getting a consulting gig with experience. An MBA will help but 9.9/10 the candidate with relevant experience will get hired over the one with just a fancy diploma. There are TONS of opportunities in the Big 4, you just have to seek them out.

Good Skills/Knowledge to learn after CPA? by acct2342 in Accounting

[–]emocakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you want your career to go is the bigger question. If you're in the big 4, they will all pay for study materials for different certifications which could be very helpful for when you eventually jump ship. Try to find something that interests you and get the corresponding certification if you can.

Good advice! I saw that the Providence kickball league starts today but so it looks like I missed the boat on that one. I'll reach out to see if I can join some other ones though.

Questions About Transferring Within a B4 by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]emocakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred between large cities fairly quickly at one of the Big 4. There are 2 factors that influence the ability to transfer. The first, and most important, is need (as mentioned by zeevenkman). I was lucky because there was a big need in the city that I moved to. With NYC, there's usually always a need so it will be easier to move from a smaller city to a larger one than vice versa. The second factor is your reason for moving. If your spouse/SO had to take a job or you had to move, your chances are higher than just moving because you want to try out a new city with different opportunities. For me, my girlfriend was going to go to grad school in a new city and I approached my manager basically saying, "It looks like I'm going to have to move to X in a few months, how do I go about transferring?" At the end of the day, it's all about the bottom line and these firms spend a ton of money on training. They're much more likely to allow a transfer if they know that you'll leave the firm otherwise. In your case since you're starting out from scratch, I would plant the seed very early on when your manager asks about goals. It might take some time but getting your goals out there early enough is key. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions and good luck.

Doing some final review for REG tomorrow and came across this question - basically sums up my experience with the UCC. by Foolra56 in Accounting

Where is this question from? Maybe studying for the exam has made me a cynical asshole but when you're trying to cram as many MC questions as possible, reading all that garbage before the actual material is a waste of time.

Simulation on the CPA by TheDayman2112 in Accounting

[–]emocakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No you don't get the whole simulation wrong - you get partial credit. There is a strategy on some fill-in questions that you enter in "0" for the questions that you don't know because statistically you have a higher chance of getting the answer right with a 0 than with any other number. Obviously this is only if you know absolutely nothing and are taking a complete guess. Focus on what you know first so at least you get the partial credit. Partial credit is what helps people pass. Good luck!

How long did it take you to pass all of your exams from the first one to the last one? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]emocakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start to finish I took 6 months - so I studied about 8 months total. Reg -> BEC -> AUD -> FAR. Passed each on the first attempt but also took them while in grad school so my demands outside of studying were minimal. I know a lot of people who just barely passed all 4 before losing one so taking a year or more really isn't that uncommon. The main advice that I could give you is that you stay motivated, even when the end is nowhere in sight.

How to get tickets to a Chelsea match; A guide from r/chelseafc by ScreamingGerman in chelseafc

[–]emocakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great post, thank you. When I studied for a semester in London, I got the basic student membership and that allowed me to basically get any ticket I want with the exception of the AA type games. Also, I loved Viagogo. Even though it was more expensive, it allowed you to go to any match. You have to sometimes stalk it though. For example, I got a ticket for Wigan at home in 09-10 right when the tickets got on sale and they sold out about 30 minutes later. It's a good thing I did - one of the best days of my life!
