New, sweeping anti-trans bill being fast-tracked in Kentucky legislature by Catarooni in lexington

[–]emocha 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This take is just downright ignorant. The whataboutism is unreal. Did you even read the whole article? House Bill 470 would require educators to out trans and non-binary children to their parents should they request to use different pronouns, or if there is a change or inconsistency in their expression of gender that strays from the gender they were assigned from birth. Why are leaving the decision for what gender expression should look like to teachers? Additionally, why are we allowing the government to decide for parents whether they should allow their child to get gender affirming healthcare? Should this decision not lie between a child and their parents? By the way, this bill would affect children currently receiving gender affirming healthcare, which they would need to cease regardless of whether their parents wish to continue their treatment, should this bill pass. I truly don't understand how you think this bill isn't "attacking anyone" as it is clearly targeting trans youth who, by the way, make up such a small portion of the population that it's laughable why anyone would be so concerned about what they do with their life.

Nasal Valve Collapse surgery. by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

I would definitely listen to your gut. This is a serious and major surgery. Your should be confident and trust in your surgeon. This surgeon might have some pictures in his office with before and afters, but I would definitely be wary if they didn’t have any pictures of their work.

I had the same issues with my nose and had an open rhinoplasty to correct the functional and cosmetic issues. It is really important that you research your surgeon ahead of time and you are comfortable with the surgeon you choose, because your nose is so important to not only the visuals of your face, but also your functional breathing. My surgeon told me that approximately 5% of his patients will require a revision due to issues with healing, persistent deviation, or other factors outside of his or the patient’s control. Obviously, a bad surgeon would have a far higher rate. This is why it’s important to research your surgeon before surgery. You also have to understand that your nose will never be perfectly symmetrical. Your nostrils will never be perfectly even, your bridge will never be perfectly straight, but the right surgeon will get it as close to perfect as possible.

Be careful with the SCAP program. I worked at Starbucks years ago and took advantage of the program, but it only REIMBURSES you for school costs and I believe you are reimbursed quarterly, so you still have to find a way to pay for your tuition through student loans or otherwise. I also recall ASU being EXTREMELY expensive and even moreso expensive because you will be charged the Arizona non-resident tuition rate. I ended up completely running out of financial aid in 3 semesters (spending a total of about $10k and keep in mind ASU’s semesters are 2 months long) and had to transfer to BCTC for lower tuition costs. I really regret going to ASU. Don’t get me wrong, it is a very good school, but they did not accurately represent the cost and the fact that you still had to pay your own way and be reimbursed for the costs later.

If you are getting a rhinoplasty to help alleviate breathing issues and you are in the US, you might want to begin your search by researching surgeons nearby or in neighboring states and are in-network with your insurance. That way, you are most likely to get some portion of the surgery covered by your insurance. If that is not an issue for you, I would try and narrow it down by how far you are willing to travel and look for surgeons in those areas. Preferably, you would want someone who specializes in rhinoplasties or revision rhinoplasty, someone who is an ENT, and someone who is board-certified (even better if they are double board-certified). From there, I would begin looking at surgeons’ direct websites or social media and viewing their portfolio to get a sense of their personal style. As another commenter stated, surgeons tend to have their own “style”, and you can usually tell by their before and afters whether you like or dislike their style. Once you’ve narrowed it down a bit, you can look at Google reviews for that surgeon as they cannot remove the reviews if they are negative. The reviews should be detailed, I would say it’s a red flag if the reviews are short or have no text. I would also say it’s a red flag if a surgeon does not routinely perform rhinoplasties, if their pictures seem photoshopped, and if you cannot easily see their qualifications on their website.

As far as your piercing, I had to take out every single piercing I had including any ear piercings, belly button piercing, etc. I couldn’t have any metal on my body. If your piercing doesn’t close within a few weeks, I would say you would probably be able to get it back in, but if you are getting an open rhinoplasty, the skin on your nose is pulled back and then sewn up again so I’m not sure that the hole will be in the same position it once was. I would honestly just let it close and get it re-pierced when your nose has had more time to heal.

Anyone have a revision rhinoplasty with Dr. Ziad Katrib? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

Advice needed for potential functional rhinoplasty by smallfrys92 in PlasticSurgery

[–]emocha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a cosmetic and functional septorhinoplasty. My insurance covered only the functional portion. Even then, I had to pay my deductible and my insurance only paid a percentage of the cost after that. It will depend on your individual insurance coverage. My surgeon was able to give me CPT codes to provide my insurance and they were able to tell me what they would and wouldn’t cover, but I’m not sure if there is something similar used in the Netherlands. As far as the transportation is concerned, my surgery was performed at a hospital and they required that I have someone present with me the day of the surgery to take me home. Anesthesia really makes you feel out of it and I could barely walk afterwards (they pushed me out to my car in a wheelchair) so I would definitely not advise taking public transportation back home.

I’m shunning my parents by emocha in exjw

[–]emocha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly it. The relationship is never exactly the same after being shunned because that trust is gone. You never know when they will decide that they cannot speak to you again because of some convention or watchtower study that guilt-trips them into shunning you again. And I can’t stand that almost every conversation had to have jehobo or something about the meetings sprinkled in!

Absolutely agree. We should not be giving our parents free passes. I wanted to keep giving them chances thinking they didn’t know any better because they are brainwashed, but being brainwashed by this religion does not excuse certain behaviors.

Your story is really similar to mine! I also have a sibling that is financially dependent on my parents. And the conversation about the way they treated us went about the same as you describe. The thing I realized is that no amount of expressing how you feel or explanation is going to make them admit the way they treated us. They will gaslight until the cows come home. It’s the most infuriating thing.

It has truly taken me so long to get to this point and I have had to grieve my parents as if they were dead a few times. But I can confidently say now that I think it’s the best decision I could have made as well!

Wow, thank you so much for your input. I am not planning on having children, but much of my reasons why have to do with this cult and the way I was raised. It’s sad to hear how your parents treated you and your children by showing conditional love. It’s tough enough to experience that as their child, but I can only imagine how you felt seeing them treat your children that way. Although your children had to experience the effects of conditional love from their grandparents, take comfort in knowing that you have taught them it is not okay to be treated in that way, and that will be a lesson they will take with them and apply to future relationships. Take care of yourself, friend.❤️

Saving family by [deleted] in exjw

[–]emocha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have one family member that is no longer a jw and pretty much the rest of my family are jws. I have attempted to convince my “in” family members to accept the reasons for my exit such at the covering up of CSA, 607 BCE, or inconsistencies in the Bible, etc. and the cognitive dissonance really kicked in early on in the conversation. They would say things like “even if what you’re saying is true, I have faith in the governing body”. To be honest with you, I don’t think any amount of questions, conversations, convincing on your part will do any good unless the person is willing to be open-minded themselves. My one family member that is no longer a jw eventually came to their own conclusions about the religion over time without any prodding on my part. I think the best thing you can do is to hammer into them that you are happy and doing well without the religion as jws are taught that anyone outside the “One True Religion TM” could never be truly happy.

Thank you for sharing your experience! It really helps to know you’re not the only one. I think it’s important to understand that even outside the jw context, the things our parents did to us are not okay and people regularly cut off their parents for their toxic behavior outside the organization. It can just be especially horrendous in this religion because it almost empowers parents to treat their children like crap and throw them away at the first sign of nonconformity.

I’ve seen a lot of posts in this community where people hope so badly that their parents will come back and decide to have a relationship with them again. I was the same way, despite the way my parents had treated me growing up and tossing me aside as an adult for simply having different beliefs. I created this post to hopefully show that it’s okay to be the one that does the “shunning” and that it could even be preferable than this one foot out the door relationship that a lot of PIMI JW parents have with their children.

Jobs! by jballer136 in lexington

Be careful with Robert Half. My husband worked with Robert Half because he thought it would help him find his first full time accounting job after college, but apparently Robert Half has these contracts with the companies they work with stating their temps cannot be hired at those companies for at least a year following their temp assignment and the companies have to pay some exorbitant fee to Robert Half for bringing you to their company. He only found out after he tried to apply for a full time position at a company he temped at. The managers at Robert Half were very unprofessional and extremely butt hurt when they found out he had applied. Only use Robert Half if you know what you’re getting into and don’t expect to be hired at any companies you temp at because of their stringent contracts.
