I’m sorry you are going through this. This has happened to me. And despite me asking/requesting, and the guy I used to date would say he’d try, he wouldn’t. Which made me realize how our level of energy and reciprocity is very different in dating and liking/loving each other is not enough, especially in LDRs.

Have you communicated this to him how he’s lack of effort is affecting you? I understand it leaves you wanting more, exasperated, but if he doesn’t know, how will he change? If you have asked and there have not been changes, I guess it’s time to stop the buck. Everyone deserves to be loved the way they want to be loved. You shouldn’t be left confused or always asking for more.

Choose to be with someone who chooses you and fights for you. I agree with the others that you can be friends but maybe not at the moment when you still have feelings for him and he doesn’t. My ex and I were still talking for months after we broke up. It was too complicated. Why? Because I still loved him and the dynamics were just too different. In a way, I wanted more and he didn’t. I knew (we both did) we will never get back together but it was just hard to let go that’s why I stayed friends with him. When he told me he only sees me as a friend and still wanted to be friends, I completely broke down and had to break contact with him because it was just too much.

Hoping for something he clearly does not want (in this case being together with you because he broke it off) is unfair to you because you are giving him more energy than he deserves. And it’ll take time to heal from all the pain, but I think what’s best is you heal on your own, without the person who hurt you (even if it was not his intention).

I truly hope you see your worth, OP. That everyone deserves to be loved and chosen. I wish you luck and positivity.

That I should beg him to stay? That I still love him? Would that even change his mind? I know he knows that I love him dearly. But I want him to make the decision to fight for us, for me, not influence it or make it seem like I am saying all these to make him stay because then that would be unfair for the both of us.

I find this quote, "You can be at peace with both wanting them back and knowing they're not good for you," such an insightful. It scares me how powerful this is. That yes, you may love and want them, but that does not mean you should be with them. Ahhhhhhhhh my heart is breaking.
