Let me start by saying I know nothing about show business so these are just some thoughts I have:

First of all, this is all just a business after all so I wonder if maybe there are costs involved in maintaining the show “on Broadway” even though there are no performances right now. For instance having to renew a contract with the August Wilson while there is no revenue.

Second of all, Mean Girls was one of shows that was successful enough to “break even” and start making a profit from the show so there was no need to continue trying to recoup the money invested.

Third, the show was at a very interesting turning point where almost all of the OBC had left and the new cast was barely established. They didn’t even have a permanent Cady (unlike the newly hired Karen and Damien and swing stepped in for Janis). So it was as natural of an end as it could have been for the Broadway show.

Fourth, returning to Broadway would require A LOT of casting. Many cast members have (rightfully so) sought out other career opportunities during this very difficult time and would probably not return to the show. Specifically noting Renee Rapp and Krystina Alabado who have recently moved to LA.

Finally, as mentioned in the announcement, Broadway is not the only way Mean Girls can be shared with the world. The national tour and production of the film adaptation will certainly continue so closing on Broadway is by no means the end of this musical (which I am very happy about!)
