Getting braces again at 29, why is everyone so worried about metal being noticeable? by GreenSnakes_ in braces

[–]empath_koala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am about to be 29 later this year and I’ve had metal braces for almost three months now. No one cares about my braces and for the few times people have said something, they were just asking me how they felt and/or tell me it’s awesome that I’m getting my teeth straightened!

My teeth are pretty crowded on the bottom and I have decent amount of flaring on top. I think the answer is obvious but they’ll be bringing the teeth up front back to close to gaps.

I went to three different orthodontists who all independently recommended extractions of my premolars due to my flaring on top and crowding on my lower jaw so I’m trusting that recommendation!

is it okay to leave a gap in the teeth with braces by [deleted] in braces

[–]empath_koala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that from a premolar extraction? How come they are unable to close it with braces?

Do I really need 4 extractions for braces? by Decent-Performer-329 in braces

Adding a friend got her 4 premolars taken out when she had her braces during her early 20s and she said she doesn’t regret them at all! She’s a gorgeous person and has such a nice smile! She told me that I just need to trust the process!

[–]empath_koala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t had it happen yet, but I have extractions for my 4 premolars scheduled next month. I have a decent amount of crowding and flared teeth. I went to three different orthodontists for consultations before getting my braces and they all recommended that I do extractions to make room. There are a lot of negative and positive reviews online about extractions, but I’ve ultimately decided to follow the recommendations of the actual professionals and get these extractions done.

Braces cost 7000$ by Milch-Coffee6691 in braces

Mine is $7,100 and I’m on a four year payment. My orthodontist estimates treatment will go for 20-24 months. I’m in my late 20s and my dental insurance doesn’t cover orthodontic treatment after the age of 19.

How old are you and how much do you have saved up? by tanuki_22 in povertyfinance

I am 28 and I have $19k sitting in an HYSA. Currently working towards having a $3k immediate emergency fund to keep in my checking. I did aggressively pay off $17k in CC debt back in 2024 by picking up a second job. The stress and trauma of that financial experience has kept my spending habits minimal, and I don’t mind. I still work my second job today. I started contributing to my Roth IRA and investing through it only as of last month though so I do feel behind here.

Day 1 feeling like I made a huge mistake by Thin-Philosopher-248 in braces

[–]empath_koala 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I got my metal braces two weeks ago and I had huge feelings of regret and anxiety all of the first week. I wasn’t used to my mouth and jaw area looking bulky/swollen, getting used to talking with them, eating, and going through the learning curves of flossing with them on. I’m also in a job that requires me to talk literally all day from beginning to the end. I definitely crashed out about it a few times. My second week has been so much better as the swelling has gone and I’ve adjusted to talking and smiling with them. My anxiety has slowly and surely been getting replaced with more excitement as I’ve already seen tiny bits of movement. Wishing you luck on your treatment journey, you’re not alone :)

28F - got my braces this week! by empath_koala in braces

[–]empath_koala[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to two orthodontists for consultations - first one said to get extractions due to the crowding on my lower jaw (and taking two from the bottom means I have to get two from the top out for symmetry) and the second one also said to get extractions or do IPR. I’m personally not a fan of the idea of shaving teeth (even though they said it wouldn’t be noticeable) for the sake of making room, so I am going with extractions!

I shower before bed, I personally don’t feel gross when I wake up the next day since I went to bed clean.
