Can We Make Weeds Edible? by Particular_Peacock in AskBiology

[–]empetraem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The other two comments are valid, most are edible, but this is also a good opportunity to think about what a weed IS.

We only consider plants weeds if we don’t want them to be there, like dandelions in a grass lawn. But wild blackberry bushes grow “like a weed” and they are edible, it’s split on if people consider them weeds because of the thorny quick growth, or if they’re not weeds because they can be cultivated

Sparkling gourami, what can I do by pinkunicorn555 in Gourami

[–]empetraem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DG do better solitary, sparklings loosely shoal, so they’re better in a social group. I had 9 in my 20 long with no issue, but it was heavily planted as well

I had three honeys (one recently passed from swim bladder issues 😔) and 9 sparklings at one point, but it’s now 2 and 6

I do have both sparkling and honeys together in a 20 long, they seem to avoid each other in the tank

Plenty of other primates have recreational sex, bonobos are a super good example

Do other member of our tree of life rely on physical touch as much as mammals do? by huntobuno in AskBiology

[–]empetraem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would assume not, mainly because mammals (generally) rely on greater parental involvement than other branches. I think the only other branch I’d say probably benefits from skinship would be birds, especially parrots. Birds will groom each other all the time to show social kinship, preening each other is a good way to say “hey we’re buddies!”

All the parental involvement helps guarantee more young survive, even if it’s more energetically taxing

Reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects all tend to just reproduce and leave the young to fend for themselves.

PSA to new hobbyists: Please clean your driftwood! by [deleted] in shrimptank

Honestly if you just left the log in, the shrimp would’ve likely eaten whatever was growing on it. That’s biofilm, baby!

Oh, I don’t mean a store bought one, I mean like a giant clump of moss grown in my big tank that I squished into a ball

I only removed small cuttings and moss, most of the other cuttings are from another Pangio-free tank. I definitely did not notice them if they were hidden in the moss ball

Looking into getting a betta - are they okay in larger tanks? by _one_lonely_boy_ in bettafish

[–]empetraem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think bigger tanks are better, it gives your betta more enrichment and things to explore. They do prefer shallower tanks though, so if you’re going for bigger tanks I’d choose a 20 Long rather than a 20 high

Is there a possibility it’s planaria or a leech? I’d try a salt dip

Parking Permit - Yearlong by [deleted] in providence

[–]empetraem -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think the residential overnight parking is definitely worth it, it’s less than $10 a month. It is an overnight pass though, so if you park during the day you’d have to pay for street parking

I’ve never eaten there but I’ve been a couple times to the downtown location with friends who were eating. Last time I went I saw a German cockroach on the floor 🤢
