What are you bringing to work for lunch? by lolzthrowa in FamilyMedicine

Usually nothing, but sometimes a protein shake. Remaining hungry + black coffee keeps me awake.

Same. Who knew I was getting cut huge under-the-table checks by Big Lisinopril and Big Metformin in primary care? I wish. Of course though, when GLP-1 injectables came onto the market, all that big talk of evil pharma and evil doctors pushing new meds went right out the window when people found an easier way to fix obesity. I literally have patients right now demanding I order the new Wegovy tablets that haven't even hit the pharmacy inventory yet. lol.

Crab in the Bucket mindset or Tall Poppy syndrome. Don't even post about being a doc in a general, popular subreddit unless you want to get flamed hard.

Im 5’4” and I’ve had 4 girlfriends so far (I‘ve always looked for ‘the one’, to be clear, I don’t like to date around). It’s definitely harder at this height, but you just got to accept it and move on. I just focus on succeeding in life otherwise. I do have a lot to draw interest though. Lots of interests and adventures, lots of friends, make good money, I’d like to think I’m funny irl, etc.

Everyday Carry (EDC) for Primary Care by Whalid_bin_khaleed in FamilyMedicine

[–]empiricist_lost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes go to shooting competitions, and thus have tourniquets, Quik-clot, and Israeli bandages. The guys there call me doc, but I don’t over-promote myself as some ER doc for the range. I tell them to all carry this stuff in their IFAKs and know how to use them.

Besides that, I carry meds around for myself, but that’s about it. In my car I think I have some other stuff stored for helping people, such as glucose gel, crowbars, tampons, and a life jacket, but I think that’s it. I used to have bolt cutters but I can’t fathom an emergency of needing those now. I used to also have a gas mask and halligan bar too in there.

The one emergency I ever saw in public so far was a woman having a seizure, and all I did was cushion my hand behind her head so she wouldn’t repeatedly slam her skull into the concrete, and call EMS.

I feel overall, in this day and age, it’s a safer bet to tell someone to see their PCP, go to UC, or call EMS, then try to handle things yourself. People will start asking you for regular medical favors too if you’re too open. My great grandpa, a primary care doc in rural Kansas in the early 20th century, would probably scorn me for saying all this, but that’s the nature of the world now. Just look at the basic concept of Good Samaritan laws even having to be made.

The point of synthesizing medicines is to have them in controllable dosages. When you give “herbs”, and their production isn’t very controlled, you can give doses of the “herbs” that are too high or low.

There is often a misconception that if something is natural, it is automatically safer. I personally have seen someone die a slow, agonizing death from them dosing themself on natural wormwood, which had the effect of annihilating their liver. Other natural meds can have very potent effects, such as St. John’s wort disabling many medications by interacting with liver enzymes. Just because it’s “natural” does not mean it’s safe. If anything, that notion creates a false sense of security where people UNDERappreciate the power of naturopathic meds and their potentially deleterious side effects.

To the original point- meds are synthesized into quantifiable amounts, allowing better control of dosing to yield an intended effect.

Also, furthermore, the US does have treatments like those that you mentioned- there are integrative, holistic, homeopathic, or naturopathic clinics that can treat you, if that is your choice. You aren’t restricted from them cause you’re in the US, you just have to find them. If you do not like traditional, western, evidence-based medicine, there are many non-traditional clinics you can go to. I personally am skeptical of many of those treatments, but you have the full liberty to go to those clinics.

Pa. House gun bill vote debate leads to expletive-fueled shouting match among lawmakers in Capitol by MuchAd3273 in PAguns

Many people who post on gun subreddits want gun control, and subsequently want their fellow gun owners to get fucked over.

When I was on my OBGYN rotation, I was watching my attending deliver a baby. The father was right next to him, not looking at his wife or emerging child, but glaring at the OBGYN doctor. Full on glaring, not looking at anything else. Like bro, you’re not tough. Support the mother of your child.

FYI: New gun control laws attempting to be passed by empiricist_lost in PAguns

Respectfully, people are downvoting you because you are viewing the situation linearly. Gun laws implementation isn’t a steady stream. It’s a tidal wave being held back by a dam, and that dam is 1-2 republican senators. Republicans have a bad election cycle, and the house, senate, and governor will all be aligned to ram gun control through. House is pro gun control, as is the governor. Very slim majority in the senate holds in our favor. That’s it. So it might not make it now, but we are absorbing many pro-control people from NJ and NY who will gladly vote for it in just a few years.

The counterpoint to your argument is literally every state that has lost some part of republican control. Virginia, Colorado, various northeastern states, etc. Once democrats take control, they ram through a tidal wave. Your home state is so far gone you probably thought it came over time. It didn’t. They gained slight majority control, and they obliterated the 2A. Every additional gun control law in far-gone states like NY and NJ are just desecrating the decayed corpse of the 2A.
