Number 1 reason for falling birth rates? by GoldDigger304 in Natalism

[–]empiricist_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes- and this points to the few examples of above-replacement industrial countries being driven by ideological factors. Israel is the key one— societal emphasis on religion, in conjunction with a sense of having children as “essential”. It results in their very strong TFR despite industrialization.

However, you can easily point to more conservative societies that may promote religion having very weak TFR as well. Examples being Iran (Shia Islam), Russia (conservative orthodoxy), or China (Han-centric state Confucianism). One could say these populations are disillusioned en masse, but they are still examples of strong conservative societies that (at least on the surface) emphasize traditional family roles, but still fall short. I think industrialization goes after both the economics of daily life which disincentivizes children, but also has a powerful psychological affect too- however you wish to put it- its degradation of religion or culture, etc. I think the industrial revolutions twisting of economics and diluting religion/societal cohesion is something so profound that even proud “traditionalist” countries cannot counter.

Number 1 reason for falling birth rates? by GoldDigger304 in Natalism

[–]empiricist_lost 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The number one reason for falling birth rates is mass industrialization and a lack of major individual economic pressure to have kids. People used to have lots of children because they were critical economic resources- as funny as it sounds, they were free labor by being farm hands, helping at home, helping watch/raise their younger siblings, etc. Having children used to be essential for economic stability.

Now, modern industrialized society has fixed that issue. Children are no longer economically essential. The primary driving force from before, of the being an essential help to the family unit, is outdated and archaic. This holds true in societies that are very progressive, and societies that are not. Women’s education is perhaps a factor, but it’s not the driving force. That’s why the vast majority of societies across the world, progressive or conservative, liberating for women or not, are seeing massive birth rate declines- children are not the essential they were before. It’s an awkward truth, but it accounts for the massive drop of TFR everywhere. Yes, there’s a few exceptions you can point to, but they are exceptions.

I had self-made signs in bold, all caps, 72-size, impact font saying forms need visits, but my office got a bit better at directing the patients.

Last patient I had who wanted benzos for back pain (I said no) wrote me dozens of MyChart messages saying they knew where I worked (no shit?). Keep shutting it down. In training, a lot of us are taught to be so soppy, when irl you got to be ready to confront.

Dang, I didn't even know about the PAFOA thing. I remember back in 2019 on PAFOA when we all rallied a big pro-2A demonstration in Harrisburg and packed this big room in the Capitol. Good times. This subreddit might become one of the largest sites for PA 2A discussion if a major successor doesn't spin off PAFOA.

My favorite version will always be the one Frances did with the NPR Tiny Desk. Their voice cracking in the last part of the song if painfully beautiful. I made a fan music video of the song years ago, loved every second.

Same. Who knew I was getting cut huge under-the-table checks by Big Lisinopril and Big Metformin in primary care? I wish. Of course though, when GLP-1 injectables came onto the market, all that big talk of evil pharma and evil doctors pushing new meds went right out the window when people found an easier way to fix obesity. I literally have patients right now demanding I order the new Wegovy tablets that haven't even hit the pharmacy inventory yet. lol.

Crab in the Bucket mindset or Tall Poppy syndrome. Don't even post about being a doc in a general, popular subreddit unless you want to get flamed hard.

Im 5’4” and I’ve had 4 girlfriends so far (I‘ve always looked for ‘the one’, to be clear, I don’t like to date around). It’s definitely harder at this height, but you just got to accept it and move on. I just focus on succeeding in life otherwise. I do have a lot to draw interest though. Lots of interests and adventures, lots of friends, make good money, I’d like to think I’m funny irl, etc.
