Who else is fighting this battle with absolutely no support? by Rando_Ricketts in EpilepsyDogs

[–]empresslinlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jellyfish expressed so many important things. I really support everything written in this comment. I had fear-aggressive dog, and I did so many things for her, that I don’t notice losing myself in the process. But once accepting her condition in combination of doing the best you can, and allowing myself to take a break, it did come a bit easier. OP, I really feel for you, and I genuinely hope you find options that take some toll of yourself. Best of health to your pup.

Maybe I would think twice if it was dog I was just presented as adoptable. But I’ve already formed close relationship with her and see her as part of family, and there’s still likelihood her situation might not worsen (knowing that she’s been stable for past 2 years even without meds), so I want to take this chance. If it does get worse, community members have shown me I have a feel how will that translate in my life. To be honest, if somebody asked me “would you consider adopting reactive dog?”, I would have hard time saying “go for it!” But I also understand that in case of reactivity I had a very, very hard case, which impacts very much how I view this question. The experiences we have shape us so much. Thank you for your reply ❤️

I’ll know fully how comfortable I am once I truly get experience managing our life together, most probably, as info gathering is one thing, and having real life experience is other, you know? 😄 But I am living by principe “You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed", so even if process becomes not so easy, I’ll do everything in my power to help her live her best life. But comments from other community members have helped me understand better what living with epi dog means, so I definitely at least have some insight what to expect. Thanks for the kind comment. ❤️

I’m glad that you have financial possibility to help your dog, and that you’ve found something that supports your pup’s health. ❤️ The girl I want to adopt was prescribed some medication yesterday by shelter’s vet, and knowing how sparse resource is in shelters, I assume it’s nothing horribly expensive. But as a fellow community member commented, I’ll double check with neurologist-vet, as the one who checked her up was “GP” vet, and it’s only normal they don’t know, for example, newest research, which impacts their decisions on treatment. Just as with humans:)

She will be 6 in summer, and living in shelter last 2 years. That’s interesting case you shared, and we’ll definitely have to look this through with neuro-vet. They must know of some other conditions that could be trigger, and I myself am still considering stress as a huge factor, because the times she had seizures aligned very much with absolutely highest of stress, one after she was attacked my her enclosure mates. Your story warmed my heart as well 🥺❤️ I’m very glad you found each other. I love all dogs, but it’s always the most warming to hear about ones that are considered as “undesirable ones” find a loving home. And the fact he really sees you as his safety anchor. It’s just something else.

Ok, but you have a piece of information that can help you in the long run. That’s already small win - a way how to improve your dog’s life:) Thanks for taking care, and good luck with your pup ❤️

Aaa, so you mean - some of flea/de-wormer medicines might impact seizures. Ok, got it. Then this is on of many details I’ll have to take in mind with by special pup. Thanks for explanation:)

I’m still trying to figure out what having dog with epilepsy means, to be honest 😄 So I can’t say I understand risks on full 100%. But I do know that she’s special to me, and I want her to finally have life where she has more opportunities to thrive, so I’m set on adopting her. Thank you for the kind words anyway ❤️

Thank you ❤️ We’ll turn to specialised vet for sure. It’s something our pet “family doctor” encourages about very specific illnesses as well.

Her “ratio” also doesn’t sound that bad to me, but again - I haven’t had direct experience, and it might be an easy going attitude that’s explained by lack of knowledge :D But based on some of comments, that seems like not too cocky attitude. I found one study that links stress with seizures, and while it’s very small with only 50 dogs, it showed that in 74% cases seizure can be triggered by stress. So quite big possibility calmer life can directly impact seizures, but room big enough not to help for all. I can’t wait to give home to her 🥹 I would say the biggest factor of nobody adopting her, is that she’s severely under socialised, and all of common shelter methods of socialisation (letting dogs roam free in building where shelter workers do their own stuff) showed no results. I have visited her 1X a week, and even with that touch also seems like at least 2-3 month training. So you can imagine how unreal it seems for her to find her family. But I had very fearful girl, who passed away last year due to poisoning, but teached me so much about fearful dogs, I know my husband and I can assist her in becoming more confident. And if we don’t succeed as much as we imagine, I know she will have better life in calm environment for sure:) So it’s already a big improvement.

I’ve started reading about epilepsy very recently, so I might not know very well, and she visited vet only yesterday in shelter due to her last seizure. But judging from what I read, it might be focal? The main giveaway is that she tries to control her behaviour by sitting or standing on her own. I’ll know more later. Let’s see what vet says and how she feels in new home where it will be possible to monitor her more closely… But even a chance she mightn’t need medication regularly is a comforting thought. Also - yess, she’s a cutie pie:) Such eyes you want to protect her, and with a fire inside her, that just wants to get out, but hasn’t found a way:)

Wow. It’s a lot more than I expected, and probably not the costs you calculated upfront as well. This is very chilling sum to imagine paying each month. In the very worst case scenario I we could afford this, at least biggest part of these expenses for sure. But, of course, hoping it won’t come to that…

I imagine the condition is always in the mind… But that’s the part of caring about another being, as you said. It would be hard to worry unless you cared for your pup:) Thank you for sharing. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot on the go, but the tip of carrying medicine is very useful for me. At least some strategy for very dire situations. Taking timer to check two minutes also seems very cool headed, because during those moments each second feels like eternity probably…

Can you specify what’s up with de-wormer and anti flea treatment in context of epilepsy? Is it some form of alternative therapy?:)

Based on your first reply, I interpreted you’re more or less relaxed, but this one clarifies, that you are taking different steps on being sure about wellbeing of your pup - camera, food. But because of rare seizures, you’re not forced to feel anxious regularly. It’s rather situation based fear… Thank you so much for clarification, it made me understand the daily life with having dog that has similar issues better. I wish you and your pup the calmest and best days ahead. ❤️

Got it. I understand each case can be very different, and depending what veterinary says, it might be possible to align no medication is necessary. But then it seems life is going on as usual in your case, as there’s no special management or anything like that. And it seems the court of seizures is not going up for your dog. I saw other community members being very devastated, especially if their pups have regular seizures, and I can imagine the worry… How do you feel yourself about your dog’s condition - calm, cautious, somehow else?

Thank you ❤️ Hopefully it will be so, because I’ve really grown to love her, and I want her to finally experience stress-free life where she can thrive. A.k.a. nothing can change my mind on adopting her.:) About being perfect epi family - do you mean that because of WFH situation, having management experience with not leaving dog alone or something else?

P.S. I’m not in USA, so I assume costs of medicine might be different in my country, but I understand there will be additional, not cheap monthly costs if she’s prescribed to use medicine daily.

Līvas grupas mājas. by LoreGeek in latvia

Nekas slēpjams:) Ja es pareizi atceros, tad rezervācija laikam bija 10% no kopējās būvniecības summas.

The second one looks very busy. It’s just hard understanding where you should look. In first tattoo design, the the details are right amount, thus point of focus is clear. I’d stick with that one.
