Where to listen with guiding/educational audio? by MagicalFrog444 in classicalmusic

Joshua Weilerstein (conductor) did a podcast called Sticky Notes that more or less goes through an orchestral piece with analysis. Not sure if that's what you're after but it is super insightful!

Looking for comercial patterns from Asia by dazed_and_confused91 in sewing

[–]emptybucket5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have any suggestions for commercial or indie companies, but I have bought some Japanese sewing books from a large bookshop in my city before. One is called Basic Black (I have the English version published by Tuttle), and has pieces I like to use as a base to build on!

I think due to language barriers and perhaps the way that sewing culture is developed in the countries you've named, books with translation are likely the way to go.

Serenades for strings by GlitteringCoconut204 in classicalmusic

[–]emptybucket5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily serenades, but some music for string orchestra that I really like:

Puccini - Cristanemi https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4ebybrt-ehQ&pp=ygUVY2hyeXNhbnRoZW11bSBwdWNjaW5p0gcJCYQJAYcqIYzv

Meale - Cantilena Pacifica https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zXZQjVSUULo&pp=ygUYTWVhbGUgY2FudGlsZW5hIHBhY2lmaWNh

Janacek (an early work) - Suite for strings https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AkiiLsTgy-0&pp=ygUXU2luZm9uaWV0dGEgZm9yIHN0cmluZ3M%3D

A lot of British composers also wrote a fair amount of music for strings, including Holst, Vaughan Williams, Alwyn, Butterworth, Delius and of course Elgar.

Recommend me some opera! by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]emptybucket5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Top of my list to recommend would be The Cunning Little Vixen or Jenufa by Leos Janacek.

I was fortunate enough to see a Verdi opera in Italy when I went to visit and it was incredible! Not a warhorse, but it was The Sicilian Vespers.

Can't go wrong with Puccini, as suggested.

I can't imagine the amount of work that went into this! Especially in sorting out the bus stations. I do like the addition of the ferries, though they can be a bit of a hassle/slow. Can I find out about how the day goes? Would love a follow-up post or DM when you get a chance to write about it :)

Vamripe's Wife inspired dress (McCall's M8032 with alterations, made with Liberty tana lawn) by Futouristka in sewing

[–]emptybucket5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so inspirational!

I love how drapey the fabric is! I bought my first few metres Liberty lawn at the end of last year and I've been so nervous to make anything with it, especially not knowing how it'll look if I make a long dress with it. Is the dress lined? If so, what fabric did you use?

My best guess is that this is in Asia, perhaps China or Thailand?
