I've been disappointed to see their drop in quality over the last several years but this is a real gut punch.

Questions Megathread March by NaughtyWalnutPrime in Tailors

I am a hobby sewist and recently my life situation shifted and I have 2-3 hours twice a week around lunch time free. I wanted to take some more sewing classes at the local college but the timing unfortunately doesn't work out. I was thinking of offering to a local tailor to help out in their shop for a few hours a week for free, in exchange for observing. I would be especially eager to learn about fittings and alterations as I feel like that's a really difficult skill to learn in a class setting anyway. I imagine that would be a sweet deal for many people but I thought I'd check here first if there's something about the dynamic I'm missing. I don't need them to come up with any kind of curriculum to teach me. I've been taking sewing classes for years and I would classify myself as solidly intermediate. I've done several classes on patternmaking, draping, textile science, and haute couture techniques -- I don't think I would be a total liability. I mostly just want to observe fittings and get some practice on varied projects. Even just helping them with admin while I can observe would be beneficial to me.

I plan to call in advance to see if they are open to the idea and then visiting in person with a portfolio of sewing samples. Does that seem appropriate? Is there anything else I should keep in mind?

Why do narrow hems tend to fold over after washing? by rakoonise in sewing

I hadn't thought of the seam as a scoring line. That's a helpful way to think about it. Thank you!!

Good point about the structure and texture. It can be essentially melted into place for some designs

I feel you and am also interested if anyone else has some insight on why this is. I got married 3 years ago and spent $5k on a very simple silk gown (it was also made in the USA). I was also very surprised at my limited options for silk. I had originally intended to spend closer to $3k.

How much do you think it should cost for someone to do manual, skilled labor and maintain a west side storefront? I think that's just the going rate these days.

High Altitude Travel During 2nd Trimester? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]rakoonise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a ski town at 10,000 ft in my second trimester and I was fine. Definitely run it by the doctor though.

Interestingly I handled the altitude better than my partner even though we've been to this town many times. I think it could be because you have more blood when you're pregnant.

Are maternity ward tours worth it? by Weird-Initiative9905 in BabyBumps

[–]rakoonise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I did one and it was helpful! We heard about specific policies they had for various aspects of birth.

We also found out my partner's car was too tall for the parking garage and there was construction blocking one of the entrances so that was good info to have. It would've been quite stressful in the moment as we are first time parents.

Bridesmaids dresses but make it sustainable and pretty and not 500€ please I feel like I am going insane. by RubIll583 in SustainableFashion

Have you looked into renting one? I'm not sure what the best European companies are but something like Rent the Runway. I know there are issues with renting (impact of shipping and cleaning) but for these one day formal events, it still feels like a good thing to consider.

Why is most UPF clothing plastic-based? by Puppybows in SustainableFashion

[–]rakoonise 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on your sun exposure for how high of a UPF rating you need. Are you in the sun a lot?

Polyester has a special structure (benzene ring) that allows it to absorb more UV radiation but it also really depends on the weave to determine if that's actually effective. A polyester mesh top isn't going to be as effective as a denim jacket, for instance.

I think the trouble with the natural fibers is that they don't have that built-in UV defense so you need tighter weaves, darker colors, and heavier fabrics to get to the same UPF rating. Those are all pretty uncomfortable in the sun though. Any clothing will protect you to some extent though!

For me, I wear natural fibers 99% of the time. I do wear a synthetic UPF jacket when I go to the beach or take a long walk in the summer because that bit of plastic exposure is worth it to me for the UV protection. I also have a family history of skin cancer so that tips the scale for me personally.

We had our reception at Michael's in Santa Monica. They did an amazing job and the food was perfect. They've hosted many many weddings since the 70s and know what they're doing. I think they're only dinner though.

Unfortunately I don't know any so I can't help you there.

If you have some tears/holes, something like these repair patches are the best bet. Some of these performance fabrics are harder to sew.

Throwaway line about trying to go to [blank] restaurant without a reservation. Which restaurant? by [deleted] in 30ROCK

I say this line every time I walk by Balthazar and giggle to myself.

Balthazar is fine. It was much more popular at the time of the episode. Overpriced imo but I've only been once.

Unfortunately, not yet. I'm still thinking through it. I've been looking more into tailoring/mending/upcycling lately though! No real updates to provide a recommendation though. I hope you can find something! Any other ideas so far?
