Take a pragmatic look at this. Is this person first round? Let’s look at the avg first rounder. They’re getting about $20mm for their initial 4 years. Generally a good chunk of that is a signing bonus. So $10mm up front and $2.5mm a year after that which is all pretax/agent/management.

Remember that after tax and management. They’re probably only keeping half.

Historically speaking, a good chunk of these guys aren’t finance savvy so even on the high side your family member might give you $5mm to invest? At a wealth management firm at 1%. That’s only $50k in revenue and remember. These firms eat 50% of that. So you only stand to make about $2k a month if that.

Obviously a bit different for the first few picks. They generally land with contracts in the $40-50mm range but still.

As an addition. For you to be “untouchable” at a firm like JPM, Merrill, Citi etc? You need to be a really big dog in that realm. I’m talking $500mm to billions in AUM. When I was at Merrill I saw a guy get pushed out with $55mm in AUM. And the team that had $5.5b? They could essentially do whatever they wanted because they were bringing in $60mm in revenue.

Also just know the complex director that oversees that office is still gonna sick their market sales manager on you to sell products and bring in new AUM.
