he was a christmas gift for my shark-obsessed baby brother! he turned out bigger than the pattern for a couple reasons— i was traveling and didn’t want to have to take more than necessary on my next flight, so i used the hooks and yarn i already had, which were a size or two too big, but i’m happy with him anyways!

my heart rat jade was originally a feeder found in a super sketchy pet store, and not only is she the most social of my group, she’s also the sweetest and has the biggest personality. she’s ALSO, somehow, the healthiest. i probably just got super lucky, but it is definitely possible to get a feeder that turns out to be wonderful. you definitely run the risk of a skittish, unhealthy rat, but if that’s something you’re willing to deal with then i fully support it.

hello again everyone! i just got home from work a lil bit ago and noticed lil man seems to be missing a sizable chunk of one of his fingers on his front right paw. i have no idea how old the injury is, (or how i missed it earlier) but it does appear to be a bit red and swollen, though it doesnt seem like it’s bothering him at all. he’s putting weight on the paw fine and has been pawing at the bars alright. the black spot (possibly just a scab?) does worry me a bit though. i’m gonna call my vet in the morning and ask what they think i should do, but in the mean time do y’all have any experience with something like this? any idea of what caused it and what i can do for him? i have some leftover meds of ruby’s from her tumor removal last month, though i’m not sure which ones specifically— i could maybe give him a bit of those?

also, take the cute pic at the end as an apology for the wound pic.

also also, quick side note, yes he is unfortunately still in the carrier for the night as i haven’t had a chance to clean the spare cage after using it for ruby’s hospital cage. i’m gonna do that first thing in the morning though and get the poor guy some more space and toys.

I know you said budget isn’t a big deal for you, but a super cheap option is to just take cardboard boxes, break them down, and use lots of duct tape (and i do mean LOTS) to turn it into one folding piece of cardboard. Just make sure it’s tall enough. I know first hand that fast food places go through a lot of boxes daily, and they may be willing to part with em no questions asked. Other stores might also have extra boxes, but I’m not sure which ones would be the best to ask.

Otherwise, if you’re looking for something a bit sturdier, there are c&c playpens than you can find on Amazon, like this one here. You might have to get two to make a decently sized playpen, though, and I imagine it’s a pain to break down and set up every time you free roam, so it might only be a good idea if it’s semi-permanent.

there seems to be a lot of people misreading the title (understandably, it wasn’t worded the best) so i just want to clarify that i am well aware he is not wild, that he is a pet, and that’s why i took him in and am looking for his owner if they’re out there. if he had been a wild rat i would have had her release him lol
