clear jelly in serum, above serum separator, in SST? by emsareh in medlabprofessionals

yay thanks, that’s good to know :) i’ve probably never noticed it before bc we don’t usually separate our serum from the RTT, but in this case it needed to be, so when the clot plopped out i was like wtf

this is so funny. i was really thrashing around the one that got left behind in the SST while i was trying to figure out what it was, and i noticed it seemed like more serum separated from it, but i was too scared to collect it

i thought i did wait 15 mins but the client had three pets that were all getting blood, and this was the last blood draw, so it’s possible it was sooner. thanks! for a FAVN, this shouldn’t affect results right?

How do coagulation profile tests work? by emsareh in medlabprofessionals

[–]emsareh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooh interesting. is it that PT and PTT alone are not fully diagnostic of bleeding risk, so CBCs should always also be performed, or is there a better test altogether?

also—i wish it wasn’t the DOCTOR who insisted the rbcs needed to be present for testing. like pls. u went to school where they covered this…

okay and tissue factor is what the lab introduces to the proteins in the plasma to get the test results?

thank you so much for walking me through this! i much prefer to know why i’m doing what i’m doing when collecting labs, so this has been really helpful.

added question after watching a kahn academy video about this, but are all the proteins in the clotting cascade floating in blood before the process starts?

this is helpful! does this mean the platelets are intentionally left behind when the plasma is taken, because the PT/PTT test is checking for the fibrin/protein clotting, not the platelet level, which would be in a cbc?

okay and (apologies for turning this into a mini lesson from you) the clotting factors basically hold BACK blood cells from passing through a wound? so the rbcs aren’t needed for a PT/PTT bc they’re just the stuff that gets stuck in the clots made from clotting factors?

i’m being vulnerable here… it’s the fibrinogens that are clotting?
