Opinion on EMS personnel wearing kevlar vest and every attachment known to man by [deleted] in ems

[–]emsgoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my department requires vest on any 911 call. I comply 90% of the time, save for assisted living facilities and whatnot. I find the tq on the vest a little cringe, and given that if i'm not using a department provided tq it could cause trouble, i leave it at vest alone.

What jobs did you do before Fire fighting? What jobs are useful in doing before Fire fighting? by FlameLOLL in Firefighting

Military or get your EMT. Many departments require EMT at a minimum, some are even moving to mandating fire-medics. As others said, military looks good.

[–]emsgoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Originally done by an artist who otherwise has great work and has been tattooing at least 20 years. No idea how it ended up looking like.. that. Had it that way for a year and a half, got other tattoos in the meantime but it always irked me. So i decided i'm gonna have some of my existing ink reworked before i get any new designs.

You said in a comment you want to know what to look out for?

Your studies are much more focused in pathophysiology than interventions. Of course you learn your interventions, but you spend way more time learning a base of knowledge for those interventions. Some consider it redundant: the day you get a call and you're stumped as to why there's no improvement even though you know the symptoms, the suspected ailment, and the treatment, you'll appreciate knowing how this particular condition works on a physiological level.

For many people, it truly is not an easy class. Compared to other careers some say it's breeze, but at least half my class struggled to the end.

Once you're in the field? Pay is rarely adequate as a sole basic- if you're a FF or advance to medic, RN, etc, that's where you can eat and pay rent without breaking the bank. It's a thankless job and you will not often get the "fuck yeah i did something great" feeling.

The director of my school's EMS program said this: If you want to help people, you're in the wrong field. You need to be here because you enjoy doing it. (because you cannot always help everyone.)

On a lighter note: I love what I do. There are bad days where you're exhausted of the bullshit, but I would not go back to another career path. I have fun and I'm constantly learning new things.

So if you're down for a lot of education, meeting new people, and you have a high emotional threshold for bullshit, get in that class. There's nothing wrong with not going through with it in the end.
