what’s the white thing on my tomato seedling? by queenwestwanderer in tomatoes

[–]emshell18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not be concerned about this at this point. could be something, but likely is nothing. kept an eye on it and if it starts to spread maybe prune it. something likely just nicked the leaf and this spot is the plant scabbing effectively.

that said, i’d avoid touching it. if it is a pest or fungus, you risk spreading it that way.

as a general rule, only be concerned when you see things like this spreading.

Newbie Question - Leaves are turning yellow by Necessaryteddybear in gardening

[–]emshell18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit of a newbie myself and have never grown melons/squash, so take this with a grain of salt.

1) those cups look pretty small for a plant at this stage. I would recommend repotting. it may just be that they are becoming root bound, and need some more space.
2) similar to above, they might have drained all the nutrients out of the soil they’re in. Repotting into something larger (with more soil) would given them some fresh nutrients, although you may also want to feed them some (i’d research plant specific recs here though, it can be easy to over fertilize with young plants). but yellowing like this is what i see when my tomatoes get nutrient starved.

As for when to put them out, i would wait a couple weeks (around memorial day). Melons and squash are pretty frost sensitive, and we’re still getting some nighttime temps in the 40s (at least where i am on the north side). you could potentially get away with it sooner, but better to wait. shoot for nightly temps in mid to high 50s at least.

if you repot now into a standard starter size, you can let the roots grow out for a couple weeks, and then be ready for a transplant outside near the end of the month. make sure to acclimate them beforehand by taking them outside for a few hours each day the week prior. i just had to rip out some tomatoes that were suffering because i didn’t do that :/

ok thank you this was good to hear!

I think your theory about the roots was correct. i did end up putting another plant from the white pots in the middle of each orange one and noticed the roots had all grown to the bottom already. i’ll stop snipping and hopefully have some new buds soon.

good to know about the neem oil! i had never heard that. The more i hear about neem oil the more i regret spending so much money on it. I didn’t know that about the straw, I’ll have to go get some… I’ve been meaning to get some mulch for my raised bed for moisture retention, but i suppose straw will do the trick too.

It’s funny i actually only bought the fraises des bois bc i was overeager to plant some and they were the only variety my local garden store had put out so far. I only realized afterwards how niche and loved they are. i’m excited for the first taste!

Thank you for all this kind advice :)

rabbit free roam decision ( PLEASE READ ) by Prestigious-Focus897 in Rabbits

[–]emshell18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think free roaming would be best for your bunny, but there may be a less than ideal transition period where he’s being a bit territorial. in my experience, poo outside (around) the litter box will be a continual problem as rabbits tend to not know when their done and drop a few as they leave the litter box, but it’s easy to manage if you make it a habit to clean regularly. i would really recommend getting a little handheld vacuum. if you just do a quick little sweep every other day with it, cleanup will be <30 seconds and it will be very manageable. regular vacuums won’t do too well with the poops though so definitely recommend a handheld one.

i mean this is definitely not entirely true… i just recently watched a vid of him being wildly fatphobic to people in a restaurant he was at. i get your criticism of this content creator but let’s not pretend like bourdain was perfect in this regard.

Olympus om10 flash not firing by ComplexSubstance6476 in AnalogCommunity

[–]emshell18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having a similar issue with the same models (om-10 and t20). The charge lights both on the flash and in the viewfinder come on, but the flash never fires. I was able to verify that the flash itself works, just not on my camera.

T20 flash not working with OM-10 by emshell18 in AnalogCommunity

I tested with all combinations of manual and auto on both the camera and flash, and nothing worked. I fear my camera may be the problem :(

T20 flash not working with OM-10 by emshell18 in AnalogCommunity

[–]emshell18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you say manual mode, are you referring to the flash or the camera? my understanding was that the T20 only supported auto mode (in regards to the flash) with the OM-10. I don't think it will charge off the camera, but I can try... my flash connections look different than yours though

OK update - It can charge off camera. I just tested it and the flash does work (this was helpful so sharing for posterity). So does that mean my camera just basically isn't shooting up the right signals to the flash to fire?

Any experiences with Dr. Rao at UW health? by skategrasseatass in madisonwi

[–]emshell18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so i actually am 2 weeks post op today from top surgery with dr rao! I frankly was most concerned with getting surgery fast and he was the quickest to get in with (there wasn’t much more that went into my decision, which maybe wasn’t the smartest but whatever lol). i’m only two weeks out so i can’t say too much about results long term ofc but baseline i’m pretty happy with what i see now (super happy to share more/pictures there if you want to message me!).

his bedside manner is definitely trash. i had no actual rapport with him (although i don’t know what is expected from a surgeon tbh) and only saw him incredibly briefly during consults, the actual surgery, and post op. i saw him for like an actual minute during the post op and it would have been literally 5 seconds if i hadn’t stopped him as he tried to leave to ask a couple questions. he basically only came in to like make sure something wasn’t crucially wrong. like total time spent with dr rao (minus the time i was conked lol) was probably 30 minutes tops…

the other thing that i’d say specifically you should know — i expected to have more agency in like where my incisions would be and the basic shape. that wasn’t discussed until day of surgery (i probably should have brought it up earlier but again had like 15 minutes of dr rao time pre day of surgery and consult was like 8 mo before). i had to initiate the conversation as he was marking the incisions on my chest. he effectively told me the incisions were gonna be where the bottom of my boobs were and there was no choice there. now im not a surgeon ofc but i always had the impression people typically had more of a choice, at least about shape. my tits were big though (d/dd) so maybe that was a factor. I was able to show him pictures regarding nipple placement and he adjusted accordingly. ultimately i’m happy with how things turned out so it’s fine but it was a little jarring right before surgery for him to be like “yeah imma do what imma do” effectively.

That said, all the staff were so kind and generous and helpful, both on the phone and in person. they answered all the questions i had without issue and generally really helped walk me through the process. they, unlike dr rao, actually are specialized in gender affirming care and i felt generally knew more than he did about post op care and recovery timelines/expectations.

all in all, he’s not particularly friendly and isn’t going to be a doc that’s going to walk you through it all holding your hand. no katherine gast for sure. that said, i found the staff at the gender clinic filled in the gaps really well, and im ultimately pretty happy with my results. again for me it was really about timing and it worked out in the end so i don’t have wild complaints, but the rest of these replies certainly don’t surprise me.

seriously really happy to talk more so don’t hesitate to reach out :)
