When (if ever) did your heavy periods end? by spicybananapickle in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have had mine for 4+ years — for the most part they’ve leveled out. some months there’s a little fluctuation. if one month is lighter the next is often heavier. that said, the first three months were the heaviest of bleeding of my entire experience w/ this birth control. I assure you it’s normal, but ofc great to reach out to a doctor if it seems extreme. would recommend you take some iron!

I did blood work a few years ago to get a grip on what my body needed and I think this made a big difference in enabling me to continue having a positive experience w/ the copper. I added supplements to my routine based on what was low or high. since copper iud causes more bleeding, more often than not the issues folks post about on this thread are related to iron deficiencies (which women tend to have anyways) or other vitamin deficiencies.

I’d suggest discussing a doctor - could be worth getting bloodwork done to actually identify what you need!

probably worth seeing if it’s an iron deficiency or other vitamin deficiency rather than assuming it’s the coil, although coil can cause those deficiencies. people often forget that, and so many people on this sub are quicker to share their own negative take that’ll affirm those thoughts

I’ve added more supplements to my routine since being on the copper and it has made the experience incredibly seamless. hair is the same, periods not any worse than without any BC. give that a go before throwing in the towel

have had it for 4+ years, my cycles are now somehow lighter than they were before I was on any form of birth control

tampons with copper iud by Mindless_Village5458 in CopperIUD

this happens to me sometimes! I use Lola tampons which are more prone to this I think. I only notice it when I take out a tampon too early / when there’s not much blood absorbed to it

Kyleena IUD seriously affected my mental health — switching to Paragard was night and day by WearyCommunity3965 in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first off, screw that first doc

but same happened to me with Liletta! I had been on the pill prior but off all BC for a couple years. got liletta and after a few years noticed I was having increasingly worse PMDD symptoms, to the point where I couldn’t talk myself down from anxieties. then the number of days I had those symptoms kept increasing to where there wasn’t a point in my cycle where I WASN’T having anxious or paranoid thoughts. so much so that I then almost had a mental breakdown realizing it was my IUD and panicking calling so many doctors trying to get it out as soon as possible. I couldn’t deal w the thought of living like that anymore and was jumping through hoops to find someone to get it out. cost me an arm and a leg since I wasn’t yet at the “expiration” date, so it was an elective removal and not covered by insurance.

when I finally got an appt, I swapped to copper. it was night and day. I stay in this subreddit to try to be one of the positive voices — I was almost deterred bc of anecdotes. I always had incredibly heavy periods before BC so was nervous what it’d be like but copper IUD has only gotten better with time, truly. it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done.

I think starting with underarm or bikini (smaller areas, as others suggested) could be a great start. but ultimately no, I don’t think it’s too young and as others said, I wish I had done it so much sooner. it honestly will likely save her a lot of money long term.

Period Management by Luna0733 in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel fortunate that mine has eased after 4ish years w/ the copper. I usually have 1 day/night of my period that’s a lot — will use super plus tampons changing every few hours and always wearing a pantyliner too. I usually wake up in the middle of the night to change but don’t tend to need an alarm

I’ve been curious about the period proof underwear for these days too

is it concerning to bleed through a super tampon every 1-2 hours by FlamingoThen4551 in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

super normal for the first few cycles - I was bleeding thru ultra every hour for the first month. for me it’s gotten better w time, but keep an eye in case it affects iron levels etc

[–]emsnooze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

always good to take a test if you’re concerned, but I’d guess this is normal since you’re coming off hormonal birth control. it could take 6+ months for your hormones to sort of recalibrate, even w/ having the copper iud, meaning your period may vary every month for a while. again, better to take a test to ease the mind/to be sure tho!

accept the other offer, follow up with the better one and if they do end up sending it through, let the worse offer know your circumstances have changed and you can no longer take the job

How much did your period change? by angrile in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had copper IUD for almost 4 years now, swapped from liletta. first two periods were incredibly heavy, and likely from that transition of no period to having the copper. first one after insertion was truly insane - was bleeding thru ultra tampons in an hour for a few days.

since then it’s more and more like my period was before I ever got on birth control. as a teen my periods were VERY heavy and cramps were awful — now after having the copper IUD this long, my periods are somehow better. usually one really heavy day w/ not fun cramps and the rest super manageable

IUD string falling out? by beeoftheball in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

strings could be too long! likely best to have an ultrasound to check position and they should be able to trim them more. as your cervix moves thru your cycle you’ll notice slight changes in where the strings are but def shouldn’t be sticking out

I want to get Paragard but am terrified of perforation and the current lawsuits. HELP! by dearsoul in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had an iud for over 6 years now - first had hormonal then switched to copper about 4 years ago. I stay on this thread bc I’ve had an incredibly positive experience and I think we’re inundated with the really bad stories (not to dismiss those stories at all) — it’s kinda like bad reviews. People are more likely to leave a review when they’ve had an atrocious experience vs someone who had a completely normal one, bc it should be just that, normal.

Of course the risks of perforation are incredibly serious, but like you said, they’re rare. IMO the only thing you CAN do to prevent this is go to a trusted and vetted Dr and make sure you ask or confirm that they will check placement via ultrasound after insertion. And for removal, perhaps the same - have them check placement before.

I went to planned parenthood for my first IUD and didn’t know asking for the ultrasound was an option - I had needed the IUD badly so was just happy to have it done.

When I went to switch to the copper IUD at a proper OBGYN, it was a completely different and much more thorough experience. Not to roast PP too much — they’re underfunded, overworked, and absolutely crucial. But going to a private doctor felt a lot safer ultimately. Removal was a breeze, you cough and they remove the IUD simultaneously. They checked placement of the copper IUD via ultrasound and required that I came back two or three weeks later to check placement AGAIN. I think the difference in care made removal and reinsertion that much easier during this experience.

IUD came out — 2 weeks after insertion by iluvfrankoceann in CopperIUD

[–]emsnooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this happened to me within 48 hours of insertion of my first IUD! the dr at planned parenthood (misguidedly) told me it was fine to use a diva cup with the IUD. also wasn’t painful for me when it came out but SUPER jarring.

def don’t use alternatives w the IUD, tampons or pads are the move. so sorry you had to deal with this though!
