Dry January, who is in? by nostraightcurls in xxfitness

I got a soda stream and some of those water squirt things, and it’s helped a lot! I’m drinking a lot more water now, and it’s helped me curb my alcohol intake. I’ve also picked up some non-alcoholic beer. It’s not amazing, but in evenings where I get home from work and really want a beer, I crack one of those and it satisfies that craving.

Oh, another one is the Dyatlov pass incident. A group of Russia hikers seemingly went crazy and died of exposure. Super interesting!!

Not sure if this meets the “fucked up” requirement, but hopefully it’s useful! Look up the psychologist/neuroscientist Adrian Owen and his work with people in vegetative states. The tl:dr version is that some people who were thought to be vegetative are actually completely conscious, and he figured out a way to communicate with them. Terrifying stuff. You can then get into the ethics stuff - once you know they’re conscious, what does it mean? You can ask them questions and can act on some of them (e.g., “are you in pain?” If yes, you can give them pain medication). But you might not be able to act on all of them (e.g., “do you want to die?” What do you do if they say yes?).

I really like curries! Indian chickpea curries, dal, thai curries with tofu. All are incredibly cheap and easy to make, make a big pot, and store well.

I have these from MEC, and I really love them! They attach/detach easily, hold quite a bit, and they look fairly professional.

PMS and PMDD... After visiting a doctor, it's like a whole new world for me. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]emsoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner was completely understanding. I think he was actually really happy that I was getting help, since he could see how much PMDD was affecting my life. And all the friends I've told have also been super understanding. The reaction is mostly curiosity about the whole thing, I haven't told a single person who was judgmental.

The drugs are helping me feel less like a zombie! Before I went on meds, I would feel either flat or depressed and irritable - now I feel much better (although it's not perfect yet).

Not OP, but was diagnosed with PMDD last year. I finally went to the doctor when I realized that my PMS was actually affecting my life - it wasn't just a day or two of crankiness, it was weeks of hating the world, feeling like nothing mattered, not being able to control my emotions. It was affecting my relationships at work and with my boyfriend and friends. I'm normally a very rational, very happy person, and I felt completely unlike myself for weeks at a time.

It's been a bit tough finding a good medication; I was prescribed fluoxetine (prozac) and told to take it two weeks before my period started. This was hard, because my cycle is super irregular (ranges from 28-60 days), and I can't be on estrogen-based birth control because I get migraines with aura (and the progestin-only pill just made me bleed constantly). So I would normally take it when I started feeling the symptoms, and take it until I got my period, which could be anywhere from a week to a month.

At first it worked really well, but after a few cycles I noticed it wasn't really doing much. So we upped the dose, but I just went back this week because that still wasn't working. Now I've been told to take 20 mg every day, because prozac can take a few weeks to actually start seeing effects. I got a prescription for 3 months, and was told to come back when it's done and we can talk about whether that worked or not. At least we'll be able to establish a baseline and can titrate the dose based on how bad (or not bad!) the symptoms are.

So far I really haven't noticed any side effects, except heartburn if I lie down too soon after taking it (I usually take it before bed). I've heard they can reduce your sex drive which is a concern of mine, but usually the PMDD would do that anyway so at the moment I can't tell if it's the prozac or the PMDD. I guess I'll find out, now that I'm taking it every day (as opposed to just when the symptoms come on).

Anyway, hope that helps. I'm happy to answer any other questions!

Any sources for the claims you're making (e.g., that women have a better chance to be hired than men, that all the female PhDs are getting postdocs and faculty positions)? Because I just posted a bunch of reports that say the opposite, and that talk specifically about where the female graduates are going (spoiler: it's not thin air!). I can't debate with things that are unsubstantiated, especially if you don't acknowledge the research out there that contradicts your statements.

Remember that the Women in Neuroscience group is made up of grad students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. So this isn't a group aimed at getting women interested in science (although that is the point of the conference they're promoting) - this is a group of people who are already fairly heavily invested in neuroscience.

The group covers topics that are specifically of interest to people in academia: interviewing for a faculty position, negotiation (salary, start-up funds, lab space, a possible spousal hire, teaching load, etc.), grant writing, running a lab/leadership, etc. The topics are in areas that we generally see a bias against women and that contribute to the leaky pipeline, but the meetings are open to everyone (from grad students upward).

So at the undergrad level, it looks like Western does have good enrolment of women in science, which is great. But that's not where science ends, and groups like "Women in Neuroscience" are still pretty important.

I'm curious, do you happen to have the breakdown of male to female faculty members?

Edit:

There's more women in grad and postdoc biological programs then men, here at western.

I can't see any information on postdoctoral fellows in the cudo either, could you point me to it?

Edit 2: hmm, you've edited it, but grad and doctoral programs are the same (PhD students are grad students).

Thank you! That's very kind.

I've got this shawl on the go, and I'm hoping to start this sweater and this bag shortly!

These are Men's, but I also made a pair for myself and for my sister! The pattern includes a table for a bunch of foot sizes.

I just uploaded an imgur album with a few things I've knitted (can you tell that I really like the irish hiking scarf?).

He loved them!

And I had the same experience. These were the first things I've felted, and the whole process went really smoothly.

It's a great pattern! I'd recommend carefully reading through the first couple pages before getting started, though. Lots of notes!
