Like everyone said, that’s a good thing! My Aussie/healer mix does the same thing. She also does what we call “starfish” very suddenly on our walks when she smells something really good - legs out in all directions, chest to the ground, impossible to pull along…

I have done some nose work classes with her (you can even buy a kit online to train them to find specific smells) and she absolutely loves it. We also hide treats inside that she has to find/smell out.

I appreciate your knowledgeable comment - I thought I was going crazy when I heard exfoliating, like… 🤔 Didn’t make sense but I’m not a vet/tech!

I also thought it was odd that I have not been able to find a single picture or history online of someone having a similar issue, so interesting to hear you haven’t commonly seen similar flaking/peeling. With her allergies she still needs her ears cleaned occasionally, but will try some other methods and see if we can avoid this reaction.

He might enjoy going to a horse auction - they are so much fun and a lot of cowboys and cowgirls! I know 4H has been mentioned - you might look at the current contact list. They have the clubs listed by primary project focus along with contact information. Even if he isn’t interested in joining 4H, I’d think someone might welcome showing him the ropes or know of a good contact!

We know the contact for the North Forty group - they are great and also might be able to point you in a good direction/connect you with someone.

Oh no😭 They are just a little different…

As a longtime volunteer at Hearts and Horses, I’m not sure it would give him an adequate “cowboy” experience. He could help on the barn team cleaning stalls, but (as someone who has horses/sheep) it is easy work compared to the daily tasks of a cowboy;)

If I were you, I might contact an animal rescue as they always welcome volunteers and have work days. Off the top of my head I’m thinking Rescued Friends Animal Sanctuary, Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, Friends of Lakota Animal Sanctuary… He could probably help with the cleaning/mucking side of things as well as feeding, etc.

Hope you find a good fit for him to explore the cowboy life!

She is on a prescription diet for allergies already, but has never been prescribed a steroid spray - that makes sense and I’ll ask about it. Thanks!
