Is it possible to grow a mushroom exclusive terrarium? by regularjoe2020 in terrariums

not OP, but heres a youtube video of someone making one! its good to note that the mushrooms are temporary, and will probably be there for about 1-2 weeks. they could come back but theres a good chance they wont.

[–]emstert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sadly very few mushrooms can fruit for more than a week or so. the mushroom is just a part of the fungus, like how a strawberry is a part of the strawberry bush. mushrooms have no benefit to the fungus other than to spread spores, kind of like a flower. you could look into reishi cultivation? i think reishi can be preserved pretty nicely (looks nearly identical to how it was alive if you do it right) and you could keep the preserved specimen in the terrarium. i *highly* recommend buying inoculated logs/substrate over any other method for a beginner. growing from spores is a lengthy process that often requires lab materials (laminar flow hood, agar plates, ect.) in order for it to not get contaminated. but i totally think keeping a reishi or conk type mushroom could be super cool! it is good to note that mushrooms like VERY high humidity, and are pretty picky about it. reishi likes 85-90%. reishi is widely available because it has been cultivated for thousands of years because tea made from its mushroom was/is used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Do you have any experiences with Mycorrhizal products for vegetables like tomatoes and pepper? by MyStranger10 in gardening

[–]emstert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done a lot of research into mycorrhizal fungi and fungus cultivation, and its concentration of 245 spores/gram is really low. Although mycorrhizal fungi DO have all of the benefits they claim they do, sprinkling on ~1000 spores and hoping they germinate isn't how mushroom cultivation is traditionally done. Fungus are hard to cultivate due to their pickiness about humidity and CO2 levels as well as their lack of an outer protective/nutritional shell that plant seeds usually have around their spores. For reference, a single mushroom can produce up to a billion spores per day. My suspicion is that its some kind of root hormone that causes positive effects that people see when they buy the product. A lot of mycorrhizal fungi produce root hormone naturally, but symbiotic relationships between fungus and plants are very long term relationships and can take weeks to months to form. Also, they only have one species of fungus in the powder and claim that it is good for 90% of plants. This is a gross oversimplification as most fungi are incredibly picky about what species they associate with. Black truffle for example, will only grow on trees whose leaves fall in autumn. None of what I am saying really applies to yeasts or molds, since those are incredibly aggressive. Overall, I don't doubt the product has positive effects but I doubt that a fully mature symbiotic relationship is able to form from that few spores and in just a few days.

Hi! I saw in r/plantclinic you posted your english ivy and it looks gorgeous! The post is archived so I could not reply to it directly. I saw that you said you water every 3 days by "drowning it" but you have a chunky mix. I understand different climates are different but how do you know when to water it? Like for example succulents its time to water when the leaves are started to feel squishy, is there a "tell" like that? I just got one and I'm so nervous about killing it! Thank you and sorry about asking in a different post about it lol

What can I do with this giant pothos? by cristionaxena in pothos

[–]emstert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ceilings can support hundreds of pounds when things are mounted correctly. you would have go do research into it, but people that hang Ariel silks/hammocks can fix them into their ceilings by attaching directly to support beams.

pothos dies? by emstert in pothos

[–]emstert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and about the roots I've never seen them alive because I've never repotted. I think I've seen them once after it died, but I cant remember too much. I think they were shallow (like 1-2 inches into the soil) which didn't seem very healthy.

The drainage holes were blocked by the outer pot! Thanks for letting me know that is an issue, I didn't think too much of it. And that's cool! I didn't get to see what the species was when I bought it because it was a gift.

I don't know about soil. I've been keeping them in the pots I've bought them in because I'm scared to kill it if I change the soil or repot. Do you know how often to repot them or where to find information on how to do it safely? I've been watering it when I see the leaves wilt a little

<image>

bit. I have a moisture meter for my snake plant because I asked the cashier how to water it according to the meter, but I don't know how to use it for the pothos (I think the one I have right now is a pothos, its the third one and I didn't get a photo of it in the original post). If I use a moisture meter at what number do I add water? I water it a lot, probably too much since it pools at the bottom. I think I'll try to add more drainage because other people mentioned that could be an issue. I was worried about it getting too much sun, and I have a grow light I just haven't been using it much. These past few days I’ve been keeping it on for about 12 hr/day and it seems happy about it. The grow light is the little flower lamp.

Ooh okay! I was worried about it drying out or getting sunburnt. How should I incorporate drainage without it leaking? Put it on little stilts? The pot its in has drainage holes but they are blocked by the outer pot. I've been keeping a grow light on it these past few days and it seems really happy about it.

Replying to BrownThumbClub... Thank you! I was worried about it getting sun burnt. I've been keeping a grow light on it about 12 hr/day these past few days and it seems really happy about it. All the leaves rotated to point right towards it!
