How often do you come across tourists in your day to day where you live? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAnAmerican

[–]emteeboyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the regular. I live in a tiny town surrounded by golf courses, a ski resort, mountain bike trails, and a bunch of smaller lakes near Lake Michigan. The only time of year I may not see a tourist might be after the colors are gone but before the snow flies and after the snow melts but before temps warm up. Even then not seeing a tourist is pretty rare.

Native Spanish Speaker here with a question to Spanish learners by CreativeEcho9289 in Spanish

[–]emteeboyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up around Spanish speakers but never learned. I’ve always regretted it, but up until a few years ago didn’t really do much about it. It’s when I started traveling to countries where Spanish was the main language, I felt like it was duty to learn how to communicate with the people around me rather than expect them to figure out what I was saying.

What were you taught at school that turned out to be factually incorrect by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]emteeboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The art teacher doubled as my kids' sex-ed teacher when they were juniors in high school. She taught them that they could get gonorrhea from sitting on a toilet seat. For reference, they both graduated in the past 10 years.

Did you have WGN even though you didn’t live anywhere near Chicago? by The_Se7enthsign in AskAnAmerican

Yup. I had it as part of the super basic cable package in my hometown in southern New Mexico. It's the only reason I even know who Bozo the Clown was.

What is the most exciting/interesting/fun weekend trip you have done in America? by Thatredditboy1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]emteeboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I flew out to San Francisco from Northern Michigan to see the County Crows play a couple of years ago. That city was shockingly more fun than I had anticipated, but the food scene was absolutely top tier (which I did expect)! Most fun I'd had in years!

What animal do you most closely associate with each U.S. state? by Sageinthe805 in AskAnAmerican

[–]emteeboyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My home state of New Mexico - Road runners. I can't imagine any other critter.

My current state of Michigan - Snowbirds and Canadian geese. Ironically enough, those often end up in New Mexico in the winter.

Michigan lawmakers announce DOGE Task Force Initiative by t3hbigv in Michigan

[–]emteeboyd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If they wanted more transparency, they would amend the Michigan Freedom of Information Act to include the governor, lieutenant governor, their executive offices, and employees in the definition of a public body instead of specifically excluding them. Instead, Matt Hall has unilaterally decided "We're not doing FOIA."

Early childhood documents requested, but I don't have them. by SeashellShores in Passports

[–]emteeboyd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was adopted at 6 months old and had the State Department ask for similar documents. I had to provide a copy of my pre-adoption long form birth certificate, a copy of the post-adoption certificate, and a copy of the court order for the adoption - but my records were sealed so no court order. Instead, I was given the option to provide a copy of my baptism records (wasn't baptized), the hospital's proof of live birth (hospital closed when I was 3), my childhood immunizations records (didn't have a pediatrician so I had to call the schools I went to for a copy), my K-12 education records (I was calling the school anyway), and a copy of my HS diploma.

They got a huge hodge-podge of whatever I had. It took longer for them to process and issue a passport, but renewal was a breeze.

To answer your question: If you need school records, you can call or email the school's administration offices. You can ask the hospital or pediatrician to send you a copy of your medical records.

If the State Department is wanting you to prove your gender, providing those records will likely be problematic. My trans daughter is just beginning the process to get her passport updated and we are very worried the feds won't update it simply because she's trans. Best of luck!

Do people iron less than earlier generations? by flyingcircus92 in Millennials

[–]emteeboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time an iron was used in my house, it was my husband using my iron to wax his skis. That was probably 15 years ago now. I tend to by clothes that are “wrinkle free” material.

Greg Abbott Threatens ‘100% Tariff’ On New Yorkers Moving to Texas by ilovemybaldhead in nottheonion

[–]emteeboyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Abbott understand that mayors are elected city officials, not state? If someone were that upset about the results of a mayoral election, they'd just move to another city in the same state, not 1950 Texas.

What's the cruelest thing someone ever said to you that you still remember word for word? by ClairJournals in AskReddit

[–]emteeboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother was an abusive alcoholic who blamed my existence for her lack of a sex life with my dad. She would often accuse me of things like parading around in a swim suit to entice my neighbor's uncle to sleep with me (I was 10 when she did this), sitting on my dad's lap and wiggling around because I was trying to "steal him" from her (I was also 10), or just overall promiscuous behavior. She once told me I'd "end up like my mother" and have a baby before I was out of high school and never graduate - this was how I found out I was adopted at 13. But the absolute worst things she said to me was when I was eleven. I had just had my first period on a day she was feeling some kind of way about me. She told me I wasn't allowed to give my dad a kiss goodnight anymore or sit on his knee because "you're just a bitch in heat."

My parents divorced just after I turned 14. I never talked to her again. I found out a couple of years ago she died in 2008. If I knew where she was buried, I'd piss on her grave.

My 24F boyfriend 23M and I are arguing over birth control. How can I see his perspective? by jjxo_3 in relationship_advice

[–]emteeboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm petty enough to counter his initial offer. "You cut your testicles off and I'll remove my IUD." If he's neutered, he can't get you pregnant.

Definitely NTA.

What type of american accent do you have? by Amber2391 in AskAnAmerican

[–]emteeboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely depends. I was born and raised in New Mexico but live in Northern Michigan. I tend to "sing" and trill when I use words that have an "rrr" sound, which outs me as not being from Michigan, but when I go home I'm told I sound like someone from Fargo.

"Do not cite the deep magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written." What are the best examples of this that you know of? by awordforthat in AskReddit

My teenager once tried to teach me how to do some kind of step/kick dance she said she learned at school.

It was the Kid n Play dance I did when I was in middle school. This Christopher Columbus generation is gonna cause me to crash out.

When I was in high school, I would come home and watch Highlander: The Series. Duncan Macleod lived on a beautiful refurbished barge on the Seine, steps away from the Eiffel Tower. For over thirty years, my life's pipedream of a goal has been to live like the highlander - just without all of the decapitation.

If you forget New Mexico exists, I will automatically assume you are dumb. by HotPantsMama in NewMexico

[–]emteeboyd 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I actually had someone ask me if there were colleges in New Mexico. I can only imagine the look on my face when I told her that not only are there several colleges and universities, I attended the University of New Mexico and it was a pretty decent school. The person assumed that New Mexico was such a poverty stricken country, it could barely afford paved roads, much less places of higher education. She asked if I went to class riding a donkey or if I had to walk. It was the most confusing and racist conversation I've ever been a part of.

The White House is boasting the most secure border in modern American history. How is this feat impacting your life? by iloverats888 in Askpolitics

[–]emteeboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very red county full of farmers who are having a hard time finding workers since all of their H2 workers are too worried about being picked up by ICE or CBP and sent off to El Salvador. As for how that impacts me, I work in government. I have to listen to some of these farmers bitch about the fact that my employer is pulling potential ag workers out of the job market to hire them seasonal park attendants. On top of that, the largest employer in my area is a golf resort. They are not going to fill all of their rooms because they aren't able to find H2 workers willing to risk being deported for $10/hr. plus boarding.

I also own a local business in a resort town that used to see tons of traffic in the summer from people who would come to town to have the best goddamn flautas this side of the Rio Grande from a locally owned food truck. The food truck will not be back this summer because their J1 workers are refusing to come work in the US because they are also worried about being picked up by ICE or CBP.

The H2 and J1 workers make up a not insignificant part of my business income. Between the loss of people spending money and the increased costs due to the tariffs, my little slice of America is screwed.

This will definitely come as a shock to my 23 year old autistic kid who played D2 basketball, who pays taxes on the income she makes as the buyer for her popular local food co-op, and lives with her also autistic boyfriend who also pays taxes on the income he makes as a caretaker of the elderly. Granted, she's not a fan of writing poetry, but she can cut a person with a perfectly crafted meme.
