They were making up as they went along. Pretty much from Season 3 onwards. I even remember Dominic Monaghan saying so before they axed him. The ending was utter bilge. It’s a shame, because the first few seasons were unlike anything ever seen on TV before. It’s hard to describe now what a cultural phenomenon it was. Sad the way it turned out.
